Although you were unable to rescue John, you were able to rescue Davesprite on the night you escaped thanks to a swipe card key on a particularly weak guard. The original Dave's whereabouts you don't know - and honestly, you don't really want to find out. From what little information you've managed to worm out of your feathered partner, the experiments the scientists conducted were so violent they literally ripped Dave into two halves - and if this Dave was the better of the two halves with his wild mood swings, bouts of rage and bird like qualities. (you've yet to find out why that happened - or why he's orange) If this is the better of two halves, you don't want to meet the worst. The only reason he's even returned here is to repay you for saving him.
All of this all the more reason to keep your promise.
