Dave slammed the trunk and slid into the front seat of the car. He was sick of this town and yearned for a break.
"Does your brother know of your departure?" Rose asked after knocking on the opposite window.
"I told him I was taking a sabbatical," Dave replied with a smirk, as he revved the engine.
"Are you sure you want to leave like this? You know, just leave it all behind?"
"I'll be back in a bit."
"What constitutes 'a bit'?"
"From the range of weeks to months, 'a bit' is somewhere in there." A silence. Dave turned his head to look at her, the smile slowly leaving his face, "Come with me."
Rose initially was shocked with his offer, until she studied his features. He looked scared. He had no idea where he was going. He had no plan. He was going to be alone.
Rose moved into the Strider house a few years prior to attend high school in Texas. She and Dave had been planning everything before their guardians even had an idea. Dave had prepped her on which clothes to bring for the significant difference in temperature. He specifically told her that "theres nothing to do around here its so boring but if you come maybe itll be more entertaining for me." She told her mother that she didn't want to go to school in New York because all the other kids were too immature for her. She can remember so clearly the night that her mother and Dave's brother talked about it on the phone, while she waited outside the door for the "yes" verdict.
And, now, here she was again, deciding to make another move with Dave. She sighed deeply, his eyes, under frowning eyebrows, still locked on hers. He really wanted her--needed her to come with him. After all the years of psychoanalyzing him, Rose could read Dave like one of her novels and she knew he was scared.
"Okay," Rose clicked the car door and carefully came in.
Dave grinned smoothly, "Good, because I already packed your things and put them in the trunk. If you said no, you'd be missing some of your closet."
"Let's say the only reason I'm still in the car is for the protection of my habiliments, then," Rose buckled her seatbelt.
Dave stepped on the pedal and the two drove off unaware of the adventure that awaits them.
