BONUS ROUND 1

Bonus Round 1

Genre-Mixing

Hey, shippers! Welcome to your very first bonus round proper--we hope you have lots of fun with it! This time around we're going to be asking you to mix it up a little--each fanwork posted for this round will be a mish-mash of two different genres, blended together in a delightful incestuous slurry to create an UNSTOPPABLE CREATIVE CONCOCTION--er. Or. Something.

Yeah, we're genre-mixing. That's what we're doing this round.

Rules
  1. Submit prompts! Prompts should consist of two different genres and one ship. This cannot be your team's ship! These are worth 5 points each, for a maximum of 100 points per team.

  2. Look through the prompts and fill whichever you like!

  3. You may not fill prompts for your ship, nor may you fill your own team's prompts.

  4. Fills should be posted as replies to the prompts which they are for, following the format below. They may be any medium.

Title Format
If you are starting a new thread, please use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.

If you are filling a prompt, use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.

Posts not using this format in the title will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, no matter what they contain. They, like all comments on the comm, are subject to the Wank Policy.

Scoring
For prompt posts: 5 points each (maximum of 100 per team)

For fills (as stated here):
First 5 entries in each post: 30 (per entry)
Entries 6-10 in each post: 20 (per entry)
Entries 11-15 in each post: 10 (per entry)
Entries 16+ in each post: 5 (per entry)

All scored content must be created/assembled new for this round.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the FAQ post here, or email them to us (homestuck.shipping at gmail). Otherwise, we cannot guarantee that we will see them in a timely fashion!

"There's no chance you're goin' to beat me, Dirk. I'm ready for you this time."

"Really. I seem to remember you saying that exact same thing at the last tournament."

"Whale, I mean it this time! I'm not lettin' some human get the best of my Alternian science!"

Dirk Strider rolls his eyes behind the visor of his helmet. He's long since given up trying to inform the wizard-prince of the rival kingdom of Alternia of the difference between science and magic. It's not like it matters much anyway--the Strider prince has beaten Prince Eridan Ampora at the kingdoms' tournament, held in the name of peaceful relations between them, five years running. And as Dirk draws his sword, he's sure it's about to be six.

As the announcer declares the men's prowess in combat and lauds their dedication to their preferred forms of combat as recreation rather than war, the princes glare across the ring at one another. They train together as often as they're able, and most of their kingdoms' citizens believe the two are close friendly rivals. But some Alternians have discerned, from the ever-escalating competitiveness of the young princes, that there's something a bit less platonic about their relationship than most humans--uninformed of troll culture--would detect. And while plenty of the more conservative highbloods disapprove of the rumored cross-kingdom kismesissitude, many of the younger trolls who came to watch the tournament are hoping to see further hints of the intrigue's veracity.

The announcer finishes his speech and asks the princes to salute one another, and Dirk and Eridan give each other the most flippant, lackadaisical gestures that could still be construed as salutes. With an exasperated sigh at the way in which the princes are disrespecting his tournament, the announcer steps out of the ring and declares that the round has begun. The two begin circling, slowly moving inward with sword and wand raised.

"You know you have no chance, Ampora. Give it up."

The Alternian snorts as he flicks his wand, a feint which fails to prompt a reaction from Dirk--as it usually does. But Eridan doesn't seem perturbed. "You're all talk, Strider. I know you're just tryin' to get me to back down 'cause you're scared. If you admit defeat now, you can save yourself some embarrassment."

Dirk lunges forward, and Eridan shields himself from the blow with a spell.

"As if there's any chance of my doing that. And I'm all talk? You must have forgotten last night. If you'd been any louder, the vibrations probably would have knocked stones out of the wall."

Eridan splutters, and Dirk uses the momentary distraction to lunge at Eridan. The troll jumps out of the way just in time and immediately starts casting a spell Dirk doesn't recognize. Curiosity as to what this spell is (considering he knows most in Eridan's arsenal) keeps Dirk from taking advantage of the wizard's lowered ability to dodge for just long enough. The ground starts to rumble, and a crevice forms beneath Dirk's feet. Though he jumps away, he only just manages to grab onto the side of the forming chasm. The crowd gasps as Dirk struggles to cling to the edge of the break in the earth. Eridan walks slowly over to him, a crooked smile on his face.

"You ready to admit I'm the superior now? If you do--and say it loud enough for everyone to hear--I'll pull you out."

"And if I don't?"

"I can't guarantee anythin'." He puts his wand into the pocket of his violet silk pants and carefully removes Dirk's helmet to look into his bright orange eyes. "I could say you slipped."

"As if you'd let me die. You need a kismesis."

"I got countless suitors beatin' down my door wantin' to fill all my quadrants. I can get another kismesis."

"Right. I think you mistook that line of suitors that's actually for the castle next door--you know, the one with the heiress who's turned out down countless times--for yours."

Anger flashes in Eridan's eyes, and the corners of Dirk's mouth turn upward. "Don't you dare talk about Fef--"

"Are you planning on getting me out of this hole or not?"

"Don't think so."

"Feferi's right over there. If she sees you let me fall to my death, you're fucked. Or not, really."

Eridan opens his mouth to say something, then closes it again. Dirk's fingers start to slip on the ground, and Eridan looks back at him with a smile.

"If you bottom tonight, I'll pull you up."

"Fuck. Fine." Dirk sighs heavily and shouts, "I concede the match."

The announcer excitedly proclaims Eridan the winner, and the troll reaches down to pull Dirk up. When Dirk brushes himself off and grabs the sword he dropped off the ground, he looks down into the chasm. Some chasm--from the angle Dirk is standing at, he can see that the endlessness of it that he observed while dangling was an illusion. While he was hanging onto the edge, his feet were nearly touching the bottom. He looks at Eridan with an expression somewhere between aghast and impressed.

Eridan gives him a crooked smile. "Sea you tonight. And don't worry about bringin' rope and that. I'll take care of everythin'."

HI MY NAME IS ANGIE AND I AM HERE TO FILL THIS

"Baby girl," her words are knives against violin strings, they're harsh, and ugly, and gross. Your almost astonishingly vast vocabulary fails you, yet again, in describing the way she mangles the term of endearment. Her teeth are bared, dozens upon dozens of razor sharp triangles protrude from her mouth. Her lips are twisted into a haughty grin. She's decked out in all black, layers range from off-gray to ebony, her fuchsia glasses keep the outfit from looking like funeral garb. “Don’t tell me you’re already flaking out on me, jailbait.”

You glare behind white rimmed, cat-eye glasses, and cross your arms over your chest. You’re also wearing all black, save for the glasses, and silver chain around your neck. That necklace has been with you ever since you were born, and you treat it with highest regard, and respect. It’s become a safety blanket, a sentimental trinket.

Especially tonight, you’re praying for its protective powers to shine through. Meenah Peixes is a shitty partner in crime, but she’s your closest (and only) friend. A petty cat burglar turned stealthy thief, she’s known for being reckless and for raining misery and despair upon her targets.

She’s also known for her wicked kisses, but that’s confidential information.

You grimace, and she quirks a pierced brow, her gold earrings glint in the otherwise darkened corridor. Her sharp teeth are tucked behind her lips, and for that, you’re grateful.

“I am not ‘flaking’, Meenah. I just find this all to be so tediously silly. Do we have to?” You try not to giveaway how scared you are with that sentence. It’s too late, though, because Meenah does a three sixty in character, and simply grins. She takes your hand, and leads you down the hallway, ignoring all caution, she practically catapults that into the wind.

“Where are we going? We have a mission, fish bitch!” You hiss, as she laughs, and laughs, elegantly sidestepping any and all hidden obstacles and traps set by the curators of the museum you were pilfering from. You don’t fare too well, sloppily jumping over barely red lines, and rigged wires. You squeeze her hand tighter, and she laughs in response.

You hated your job, but Meenah made it so much better. Maybe one day, you think, as you arrive to the main hall, decked to the nines with security devices, you might become a talented thief.

For now, you’ll be her sylph.

ah okay so this is my first time writing either of these characters in depth so I hope that it turned out well!
-------------

Jane rummaged through the old desk, looking for clues. Or rather, she rummaged through the new desk that someone had painted to look old (quite poorly, too) all for the sake of the game which Jane was now playing. Her college had decided that a great end-of-the-year celebration would be a campus-wide game with a prize of a thousand dollar check, enough to attract the attention of students (but also enough to warrant a price to pay to enter the contest), and in the end it was decided that a murder mystery was the best choice of games. Anyone enrolled in the school could play, and each person had to have a partner. Naturally Jane picked Terezi, seeing as she was the best person, besides herself, at the sort of puzzles and mysteries the game entailed. At least that’s what Jane said. Terezi was more into throwing things around and occasionally eating the hints for fun (even though she claims that the wind blew the paper away) than solving the actual puzzles needed to find the clues. The main reason Jane picked Terezi to be her partner was really pretty simple. They were dating.
How it happened was a rather interesting story in of itself, but Jane prefers not to go into that. It started with a marathon of Sherlock with a group of friends and progressed to Jane and Terezi being locked in the closet so they would stop squealing right before the best parts of the show and stop saying the lines with the characters and finally ended with the two wanting to freak out everyone else (though Jane will be very quick to point out that it was Terezi’s idea). Somehow they managed to form a relationship from that and even though it doesn’t make a lot of sense, either now or at the time, both Jane and Terezi are glad the clusterfuck went precisely the right way to come to this endgame.
Even if Jane was questioning it right now.
“Can’t we just find someone who works here and rough them up?” Terezi complained, leaning against the nearest wall and tapping her foot impatiently against the desk.
“No! Terezi that is not how a murder mystery works! We have to solve the puzzles, which you would probably enjoy more if you were to pay attention and help…” Jane trailed off as she came across a tattered-looking journal with “Diary” written in big black letters. To whoever put on this thing, way to be inconspicuous. She thought to herself.
“It’s how real murder mysteries work! Don’t you watch TV ever? All they do is beat people up to get information! That’s how you get work done! Real life murders don’t even have clues laying around in plastic baggies all ready for you to find!”
Jane whirled around to face her girlfriend. “These are not ‘in plastic baggies’ they are clues and cyphers for us to figure out! Like this one” she held up a diary page that had some scribbles on it. “This is a masonic cipher telling us a code for a safe, which we need to find. Surely you can help me find that, right?”
“Okay okay I’ll help! Hehehe I hate you see you so mad.” she cackled. “It’s probably in the desk somewhere, since it’s not like the school is going to add a wall-safe just for the mystery. So just look in the desk drawers! It’s way too simple.”
Jane nodded, but didn’t move.
“Aren’t you going to check?”
“Nope! It’s your turn to put some effort into this.”
She pouted, but Jane just smiled back. “Augh you’re so stubborn when you want to be!” She smiled back at her girlfriend. “And I totally love that.”
Terezi walked over to the desk and began opening the lower drawers of the desk and cabinet behind it until she found a cheap looking safe with the kind of lock you find on a middle school locker, with four little dials to put in the number. “What’s the password?”
Jane just handed the diary over for Terezi to read. “Jane I don’t know the cypher if you want to win you have to help me out here. You know I’m more into the murder than the mystery!”
“Alright you do have a point. The code is 4-0-0-4.”
Terezi dialed the numbers out and pulled the lock down and off the case. “Fuck yeah!” she exclaiming, thrusting a fist into the air. “We got the next location! It says we need to check out the woods near the lake. And then there is some gibberish beneath it and then there’s some gibberish written below it.”
“Hm? What’s it say? Wait no, give it here!” Jane reached around Terezi trying to reach the piece of paper.
“Hahahah come on Jane give me a second to give it over before you go and molest me to get the paper!”
“This is most certainly not molesting! Gah just let me see it I love ciphers! What kind it is? Let me see the paper!”
Terezi laughed for another moment, letting Jane try to get the paper from her before turning around and handing over the paper.
Jane quickly produced a pen from her pocket and began making notes on the paper. “Let’s see, ‘GJJF’ has two letters that are the same and it’s only four letters so it’s likely J is either E or O…” she mumbled to herself, writing three versions of the alphabet staggered differently. After another minute she smiled vibrantly. “I got it! We need to be looking for some sort of bone and that will mark the final clue! And it says we need to be looking up. Maybe it’s in the trees?”
“I so picked the right partner for this.” Terezi grinned. “Let’s go find that body!” Terezi grabbed Jane’s hand and dragged her running outside, past students who were still stuck on older clues.
By the time the pair reached the woods they were looking for they were both panting.
“Okay now let’s look in the trees to find this thing.” Jane managed to say between breaths. Terezi, who was in much better shape than Jane, nodded ecstatically and began searching the branches. “Are you sure it’s going to be in the branches?”
“Yes! The cipher said ‘better look up’! What else could it mean?”
“I saw that paper and I’m pretty sure it said glfablahblah.” Terezi said grinning widely. Jane just rolled her eyes. “It says wzoozm gjjf pk, first of all.” now Jane was grinning too. “And second of all, keep looking! Don’t make me chase you up that tree!”
Terezi laughed and turned back to looking. “Fear not Watson, I’ll solve the murder you just sit back!”
“Oh please, it’s obvious I’m Sherlock here! You fit Watson way better. You even have an injury!”
“I do not!”
“Your eyes are only bad because of a science accident, that counts, Watson! Now keep working while I do the deducing and puzzle solving.”
Terezi stuck out her tongue but went back to searching regardless. Another minute later and she shouted out to Jane. “Hey I found it! There’s a plastic skull here with a piece of paper!” She tugged the paper and read it. “Dude! This is it! We just have to redeem this and we win! Jesus fuck this is awesome!”
Before she could even finish talking she was just about tackled by Jane. “We win! I knew we could do it! This is amazing!”
Terezi cackled before leaning down and kissing Jane on the lips. “You’re amazing.”
Jane smiled widely, almost as widely as Terezi, before leaning in to kiss her again.

Only a few weeks after moving into their new home, John is announcing that the place is haunted and Jade is starting to believe him.

There's a night that John and Dave are engrossed in some new video game, laughing and shouting obscenities at each other, when Rose heads off to bed; soon Jade joins her in Rose's room, falling asleep cuddled up next to her before the hall lights go off.

They're woken up by a crash somewhere above them, like something heavy dropped onto the floor. Rose opens her eyes and whispers to Jade, "Did you hear that?"

There's another loud noise before Jade wakes up, untangling herself from Rose and looking at the ceiling. "Is it coming from the attic?"

For a minute it's quiet. Then the floor above them creaks slowly, to the pace of careful footsteps, and the hair on Jade's arm rises.

"What... is that?" Jade asks.

Rose hesitates. "...It's probably just an animal that got in somehow." But she looks doubtful as pulls Jade back down to the bed, and Jade is awake for quite a while thinking about how large an animal would have to be to put that much pressure on the floorboards.

She's almost forgotten the incident when, a few nights later, she sits up in her own bed at a steady thumping sound coming from somewhere else in the house.

"Dave, what's that noise?" she asks.

Next to her, Dave groans and shuts his eyes tighter. "I don't know."

The thumping stops, but before a minute passes something metallic is rattling above them.

"Are those... chains?" Jade whispers. "Why would there be chains here?"

"It's probably just John and Rose watching some dumb horror movie," Dave mutters. "Go back to sleep."

Jade says quietly, "I'm pretty sure John and Rose already went to bed..." but Dave doesn't respond. A few minutes later the noises stop and Jade lies back down.

When she brings it up the next morning, John and Rose look at each other and say they were asleep by then. But they both confess to have heard some strange things over the past few weeks, and John reports that more than once his glasses have disappeared from his nightstand while he slept. Even Dave, snorting at all mentions of "friendly poltergeists" John puts forward, can't deny that sometimes the wires of his music system are disconnected or switched around when he enters their downstairs studio, and the pieces Jade uses to build her gadgets tend to disappear from her basement workshop and show up in odd places around the house over the next few days.

But for all that Dave cries bullshit, John is absolutely convinced that the house is haunted. He stays awake late one night in Jade's room, refusing to sleep until he sees a ghost; she falls asleep next to him, and the next thing she knows he's shaking her awake and whispering something about voices.

John is still wearing his glasses as if he hasn't laid down at all and, sure enough, there's some sort of low, indiscernable murmuring coming from somewhere nearby. He looks fascinated, and Jade can't help but share his enthusiasm. If John is right and these are actual ghosts it could be a remarkable scientific discovery!

The noise stops and then another, slightly different "voice" sounds for a few seconds. John and Jade don't speak until it stops for good a few minutes later.

"Do you think it was actually ghosts?" Jade asks.

John grins, excited. "I'm sure of it," he says, and the next morning finally convinces everyone to accompany him on a ghost hunt to the attic.

By the time the sun sets Dave still thinks the idea is stupid, and he rolls his eyes at John in his Ghostbusters outfit talking animatedly to Jade about whether the ghosts will talk to them.

John leads the way to the attic with a flashlight in hand. The old floorboards creak, the air smells musty, and Jade nearly sneezes from the dust they stir up.

Once everyone is up the ladder-like stairs, they stop and John shines the light around the room slowly. "Hello?" he calls, but nothing answers. They're surrounded by old wooden chests and cardboard boxes with holes in them, and an old window near the rafters is so dirty Jade can't even see out of it.

"Maybe they're scared of us?" Jade asks.

"Maybe they think this is dumb," Dave says, and they can practically hear him rolling his eyes.

John turns around to face the others. "Well then you'd have something in common! You try talking to them, maybe they only talk to coolkids."

Dave just stares at him, but no one speaks, and eventually he sighs. "All right, 'ghosts,' I'm granting you an exclusive one-on-one interview with the Big Man himself. Here I am, taking time out of my outrageously busy schedule to come see you, so if you got something to say you better speak now or forever rest in peace."

Practically the moment he's done speaking, John's flashlight flickers and goes out, and a high-pitched creaking noise sounds from somewhere close to them. Despite her earlier assurance that tonight would be an exciting scientific venture and nothing to be afraid of, Jade reaches out for Dave's arm, which is a little too tense to be chill.

"Wait, hold on, I think I've got it," John says, fumbling with the flashlight, and Jade shuts her eyes in the ensuing light.

When she opens them, her brain takes a moment to recognize that, yes, that is a human-sized, pale white shape in front of her, and yes it is moving, and at once Dave and Jade jump backwards, clinging to each other and screaming.

But the shape doesn't move any further, just ripples slightly, and that laughing isn't spooky or eerie at all -- it's John and Rose, who, Jade can barely see by the quivering glow of the flashlight, are nearly doubled over in laughter.

John leans back against the wall and slides to the floor. "Oh my god Dave, you scream like a girl."

"You know what, fuck you. Fuck you both."

As Jade looks around now, she begins to see the signs -- the pulley system rigged up in the rafters that holds the fake ghost; the dust disrupted in places, clear indications that someone has been up here recently; a flashlight stowed away behind an old trunk.

Rose composes herself just enough to say, "The spirits of the house are angry with you for keeping them awake until three in the morning with your sick beats. They thought you should know."

"You know what I think you should know?" Dave says, then flips her off and leaves.

He admits to Jade later that night it actually was a pretty good prank, even if John and Rose are jackasses for pulling it and he's not going to spend the night with either of them for the next two weeks as "punishment."

Jade just snuggles closer to him. It may not be haunted, but at least life in this house will never be boring.

John Egbert has never had much luck with the ladies. He's turning twenty and has still never gotten himself to the coveted second base. But when a Halloween costume gone wrong gives John the ability to see recently deceased romance guru Karkat Vantas, his luck may have finally taken a turn for the better! The outspoken ghost is more than willing to whip John's love life back into shape if it means a fast track to the afterlife. But can anyone, even Karkat, help John when it turns out the one person John wants most is the one person he just can't have?
