BONUS ROUND 1

Bonus Round 1

Genre-Mixing

Hey, shippers! Welcome to your very first bonus round proper--we hope you have lots of fun with it! This time around we're going to be asking you to mix it up a little--each fanwork posted for this round will be a mish-mash of two different genres, blended together in a delightful incestuous slurry to create an UNSTOPPABLE CREATIVE CONCOCTION--er. Or. Something.

Yeah, we're genre-mixing. That's what we're doing this round.

Rules
  1. Submit prompts! Prompts should consist of two different genres and one ship. This cannot be your team's ship! These are worth 5 points each, for a maximum of 100 points per team.

  2. Look through the prompts and fill whichever you like!

  3. You may not fill prompts for your ship, nor may you fill your own team's prompts.

  4. Fills should be posted as replies to the prompts which they are for, following the format below. They may be any medium.

Title Format
If you are starting a new thread, please use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.

If you are filling a prompt, use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.

Posts not using this format in the title will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, no matter what they contain. They, like all comments on the comm, are subject to the Wank Policy.

Scoring
For prompt posts: 5 points each (maximum of 100 per team)

For fills (as stated here):
First 5 entries in each post: 30 (per entry)
Entries 6-10 in each post: 20 (per entry)
Entries 11-15 in each post: 10 (per entry)
Entries 16+ in each post: 5 (per entry)

All scored content must be created/assembled new for this round.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the FAQ post here, or email them to us (homestuck.shipping at gmail). Otherwise, we cannot guarantee that we will see them in a timely fashion!

Awww, thanks so much! I'm glad you liked it. It might happen, if I get more time; WV's a pretty fantastic protagonist. Don't worry, though, the rules of sword & planet say that they all end up covered in glory and subject to many further adventures.

My initial idea for this was actually way different, but I definitely had a lot of fun filling this! Thanks for the prompt~

---

John isn’t sure what to expect when Jade runs up to him at the end of 7th period, telling him urgently that “you need to see the science lab, pronto!!!” He thinks maybe it’s just another one of her inventions, or maybe she finally figured out how to un-miniaturize his lunch from a few days ago.

What she shows him instead is much stranger.

When they enter the science lab, Jade turns the light off rather than on, and she turns to give him an uncharacteristically troubled look. “You’ve got to promise,” she says, “that you won’t tell anybody.”

John promises.

“Not Rose,” she adds. “Or Dave. Or your dad, or any of the teachers! You can’t tell anybody.”

“I won’t say anything! You’re my best friend; I promise my lips are sealed.” And to prove it, he pulls his fingers across his mouth, mimicking a zipper. Jade seems reassured by this, and she kneels down to a cabinet under one of the sinks, opening it slowly.

At first, in the dim lighting, all John can make out are the eyes – two glowing gold embers, sitting ominously under the sink – and he’s taken aback. What on earth has Jade found? Things don’t get much clearer as he begins to make out the rest of the form. It seems to be a small, gray human with two nubby horns at the top of its head, and a mess of fangs in its mouth. It growls, and though it’s probably supposed to sound threatening, the creature mostly sounds pathetic. Like a lion cub who hasn’t yet learned to roar properly.

It’s kind of cute.

Jade kneels down next to the creature, speaking in a hushed, soothing tone. “No, it’s ok! This is John. He’s going to help us.” The creature growls again, and she gives it a stern look. “Be nice! Now repeat after me – Joooooohn.”

“Jade, what are you-” John starts to say, but he’s interrupted by a small, gravelly voice.

“Jaaaaaahn.”

From that day forward, every day after school, John and Jade sneak to the science lab. Things are difficult at first, but it seems that Karkat (at least they think that’s his name) has a good propensity for language, and once they give him the basics things run smoothly. He refuses to move from his place under the sink for reasons they still don’t fully understand – he keeps on pointing at his eyes, which makes Jade think he might be sensitive to light.

Still, they bring him food, and try and figure out why he’s there, hiding in their school science lab. It’s usually pretty fruitless, however, and they spend their time afterschool trying to teach him how to speak more clearly. Their hope is that one day that he’ll be answer the questions of what he is and where he came from, but those concepts are still far beyond Karkat’s current grasp of the English language. Instead, their conversations to be simplistic, and usually about food.

It becomes something of an inside joke. Jade and John will giggle about the latest ridiculous thing Karkat has done behind their hands during lunch, much to the annoyance of their other friends.

“You two had best be careful,” Rose warns them one day. “If you two continue to behave as you are, we might have to assume that you have become, as the saying goes, ‘an item.’”

This only causes them to giggle harder.

As the weeks progress and Karkat becomes more articulate, he begins to say more troubling things. He has trouble piecing together the right words, but he begins speaking of activities “below ground,” of “other friends.” Jade and John continue to try and get more out of him, but eventually every conversation ends with Karkat pointing at his eyes. “Not see,” he insists. “Not see here.” Then, when he sees that they don’t understand him, he strings together a few curses Jade accidentally taught him, and he clams up.

It takes a month and a half for John and Jade to put together the pieces, but it comes too late.

They go to the lab that afternoon, as they always do, but when they open the sink, Karkat is gone. John and Jade both tense, and they look at each other.

“You don’t think he left on his own, did he?” John asks after a moment, even though he knows the answer.

“Of course he didn’t,” Jade says. “He couldn’t leave because of...” she lets out a frustrated sigh. “’Not seeing.’”

It hits them both about the time that they realize there is somebody standing behind them. Both of them whirl around to find themselves face to face with a tidy-looking man in a mostly-white suit.

“John Egbert and Jade Harley, I presume?” Neither of them can find the proper words to respond. “My name is Doctor Scratch. I do not take tampering with our test subjects lightly, I’m afraid.” There’s a weighted pause. “You two will have to come with me.”

Terezi ♣ Aradia/Vriska is one of my secret ships!

Okay, this came out really pretty stupid. I had an idea, but it was getting too long, so there's not much road trip and even less heist... bluh.

************************

Aradia checked the map, then peered around the seat in front of her at the road ahead. “Okay. We’ll be coming up on a series of intersections in a minute. Turn left at the first stoplight.”

Vriska, sitting behind the wheel, made a noncommittal noise that could have meant just about anything.

All Terezi could do was sigh and hope that Vriska wouldn’t do anything intentionally antagonistic this time.

It was, as she well knew, a vain hope.

As they approached the intersection, Aradia leaned forward and said, “Yes. This right here. Turn left. Left. Do you have that, Vriska? Turn left - “

Vriska ignored her completely. With a grin exposing all of her very sharp, very bright teeth, she floored the rental car. It shot forward, cut off a green pickup truck, barrelled straight through a red light, and kept going.

”Vriska!” Aradia shouted, at the same time as Terezi growled, ”Vriska - “

“What?” Vriska asked with mock innocence. “I’m just taking a shortcut! I know where we’re going, and it’s this way anyway. Who wants to muck around zigzagging through all these little streets?”

You do, apparently,” snarled Aradia. “This area is an absolute mess of dead ends and one-way streets. It’s going to take me ages to get us going back in the right direction, thanks to you!”

“Heeeeeeeey,” Vriska said, drawing the word out in her grating, singsong way, “think of it as an adventure, Megido. I thought you liked those. I’m doing this for you!” She turned around and flashed Aradia her trademark Serket smile, specifically designed to be as smug and annoying as possible.

Aradia was just about to snap back a retort when Terezi decided she’d had enough, and reached over and turned on the radio. She spun the volume up until it drowned out Vriska and Aradia’s voices. They couldn’t argue over a screaming guitar that literally shook the entire car.

Terezi settled back into her seat. This was going to be one long road trip.

***

It had seemed like a good idea when it was first proposed. Aradia and Vriska had been increasingly at each others’ throats lately, with what had originally been petty differences escalating to the point where Terezi had to end nearly every FLARP session early to prevent one of them from getting maimed. Last game, she’d had to physically pull them apart, and she didn’t even manage that before Vriska had gotten a black eye and Aradia had long bloody red gashes gouged into her arm. Terezi had cancelled all FLARP sessions indefinitely and tried to mediate every interaction of theirs since then. Their fights had simmered down to sidelong insults and dirty looks - an improvement, but unlikely to last.

The World Jewelry Convention could not have come at a better time.

The very idea, of course, was illegal. It was so flagrantly illegal that Terezi was surprised that even Vriska had suggested it. But it took immediate hold. Vriska was excited for a large-scale heist. Aradia was excited for a great and daring adventure. It was the first time they had agreed so enthusiastically about anything in months.

“Besides,” Aradia said, when Terezi rejected the idea, “you know what’s going up for auction there? The Irons of Coronado! A golden icon in the shape of the Sufferer’s symbol, studded with rubies and emeralds! It’s of great historical significance, but it was stolen from a temple sweeps ago! It shouldn’t be in some private collector’s hive; it belongs in a museum! If that’s not justice, then what is?”

”Uuuuuuuugh, Megidork,” Vriska cut in, before Terezi had a chance to respond. “Can you get any lamer? It’s almost as if you - “

Terezi surreptitiously kicked her in the shin, then agreed that, together, they could pull off the greatest heist ever.

***

Terezi became significantly less enthusiastic about the idea when she learned that the convention was more than a thousand miles away. The fact that was far away wasn’t much of a problem. The prospect of getting both Aradia and Vriska there, without any serious injuries, rather was.

They’d unanimously decided that flying wouldn’t work. Even with Vriska’s mind-control powers, sneaking stolen jewels and priceless historical artifacts onto a plane would be next to impossible, if not just impossible. Train was suggested, then discarded. After stealing the jewels, it was likely that the three of them would need to make a very speedy getaway, and the fact that trains left from fixed stops on strict schedules worked against them here.

That left a road trip.

All of them agreed on it, but Terezi had serious concerns about what being cooped up in a car together for several days would do to Aradia and Vriska’s minds. Still, a car had one major advantage that planes and trains didn’t.

If Aradia and vriska’s constant fighting became too irritating, she could always pull over and make them walk for a little while.

***

The problems, naturally, began even before they’d left.

Terezi walked out of the store with the last things they’d need for the trip to find Vriska in the driver’s seat, Aradia glaring at her, and the scent of anger everywhere.

Terezi sighed in annoyance. “What is it now?”

Aradia jerked her head towards the car. “Serket here seems to think she has the God-given right to drive, and no one has any claim otherwise.”

Oh, Jegus, Terezi thought. Here we go...

For her part, Vriska sat behind the wheel, arms folded, making it clear that she had no intention of moving anywhere. “And you call me petty, Megido. Really.”

“Petty? You don’t even have your driver’s license!”

Vriska bristled. “Yes, I do!”

“Mind-controlling your instructor into passing you doesn’t count!”

“Come on, Megido, stop being such a whiny tightass.”

“Rather that than a sociopathic borderline-lunatic! At least I can promise that I won’t get us all killed in an impromptu drag race!”

Terezi just rubbed her face in her palms in frustration. “If you two don’t shut up and work something out, I’m driving. So unless you want the blind girl at the wheel, figure something out without killing each other!”

Eventually they did manage to reach a compromise. Vriska would drive there while Aradia navigated; Aradia would drive getaway. Terezi also insisted on always riding shotgun, just to make extra sure that conflicts were kept to a minimum.

She’d had to whack them both over the head a few times with her cane, but eventually they did manage to settle into a grudging cooperation. The trip was on.

As they left, Vriska humming an annoying song and Aradia pointedly ignoring her, Terezi began to think that this didn’t have to be an unmitigated disaster, after all. Road trips took tolerance; heists took teamwork. It could happen.

Maybe.

There is one single thing that has been impressed with most force upon my mind during my collection of sweeps: outside is impossible. We have been separated from the infernal red glare of the dying sun by tinted glass, saved from the dismal prospects of life out in the wastelands by a dome of perfect security, and no longer must we fear the sea. It is from the aftershocks of our own folly that we must save ourselves, and the wars have cost us much. The air outside is deadly to all who venture beyond the glass, save the highbloods, who continue their exodus by way of space travel - ships bound for the places that have been left for them to spoil, ships provided for by the corporation, the ruler of the All, the creator of the Machine.

The Machine is our surrogate mother, our god, and our protector. Under my alabaster skin I see the jade wires spreading in web work from my heart, the translucent properties of my outer shell aiding the revelation. The wires may turn cold, but my pulse beats on. I am alive.

No one has ever returned from the wastelands. Until moments ago, I had never known anyone to leave. The papers clutched in the skeletal fingers of the cat-horned prophet reveal what she and so many others fought to stop. The City - the Machine itself - has been controlling the minds of the denizens. It has been compelling the excess population out into the wastelands, as a means of providing for the decreasing amount of citizens it had the resources for. For how many years? Or for how many centuries. And if memory of these hundreds... thousands... of skeletons was erased in our nightly updates... who have I forgotten?

In the center of the City, there is a castle, its wicked spires reaching almost to the top of the dome. No one knows how long it's been there. Legend tells of a man, the man who created this town. With a sweep of his hand, he summoned it from the depths of the frozen sea, so that the citizens - also conjured - may keep him company. His ghost now peers down from the tower even as he did in life. It is there I know I must fly. There is no place for me, a rainbowdrinker now immune to the Machine, who knows the truth and can survive the wastelands. I would be killed, or worse, enslaved. While I suppose neither would be so bad - I would, after all, escape the City - I do not find them particularly pleasurable options. So I creep through the labyrinthine streets until I find myself stumbling, exhausted, to the barred door of the castle. I could use my chainsaw, but I wonder if that would make too much noise. Instead, I wrench at rotting wood with desperate, clawing fingers, until at last I dig my way inside, leaving none-too-inconspicuous traces of blood on the planks.

I collapse on the stone floor gratefully. But, almost immediately, the sound of heavy breathing tells me I am not alone. My glow illuminates a horrid, ghastly face: a young man whose bilious eyes bulge with fear. "Horrid creature," he hisses. "Get out!"

"Please, wait!" I scramble to my feet.

"This is my house! Out!"

Instead of fleeing, I find myself leaping forward, my hands reaching for the man's throat. His head thrashes against against the flagstone harder than I'd expected. I find it hard to resist biting into his exposed neck. "Please, I'm not a creature. I'm a rainbowdrinker, I suppose, but I didn't used to be. But you didn't used to be a ghost, either. I don't know how I happened to become what I am, but I know that your City will hate me now, and probably kill me. And if you really don't want people in this castle, then maybe a rainbowdrinker and a ghost would make a good team, like they do in the... novels..."

The man is... laughing? I climb off of him, realizing I've been kneeling on his chest. He sits up, rubs his face in his hands. "I ain't no ghost, an' this ain't my City. I'm just the descendant and the heir to this castle. An' you ain't no rainbowdrinker 's far as I know, just a girl with lamp-skin. But even if ya are, I can maybe arrange some livin' quarters for ya, or somefin. What's your name?"

"Kanaya Maryam."

"I'm Eridan Ampora, he says, helping me to my feet, "an' you've no idea how long I've been alone here."
