BONUS ROUND 3

Bonus Round 3

Retro Gaming

Hi shippers! Welcome to Bonus Round 3.
In this round, you'll be creating fanworks based on video and computer games from before 2000!

Rules
  1. Choose a game that was released before 2000, and post a fanwork based on the game in some way. Make sure to use the appropriate title format (see below). Examples include: character inserts, rewritten dialogue, costume redesigns, alternate soundtracks, theme song covers, photoshopped promo art, etc.

  2. Your fill should not be focused on Homestuck characters playing the game--the point of this round is to make a crossover.

  3. For this challenge, you are allowed to submit fills based on your team ship. You don't have to, of course!

  4. For this challenge, there is no minimum wordcount. We are trusting you not to abuse that fact!

  5. This challenge will run until 11:59PM EDT July 21. After that time, even if it's just by a minute according to the timestamp, no submissions will be accepted for points.

Title Format
Please use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.
Replace [GAME TITLE] and [YEAR RELEASED] as appropriate.

Posts not using this format in the title will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, no matter what they contain. They, like all comments on the comm, are subject to the Wank Policy.

Scoring
(as stated here)
First 5 entries per team: 30 (per entry)
Entries 6-10: 20 (per entry)
Entries 11-15: 10 (per entry)
Entries 16+: 5 (per entry)

All content must be created new for this round.

We would prefer that any questions about this challenge or anything else in the HSO be emailed to us at homestuck.shipping AT gmail!

FILL: TEAM KARKAT <3 NEPETA - Tetris (1984)

[personal profile] slippy 2012-07-08 09:17 am (UTC)(link)
Note: death, violence ... creepy Tetris wangst...

GHB: And so now you know the meaning of what it would be to follow this angel among trolls, and to have ALL CASTES AND COLOURS FIT TOGETHER.
GHB: GOOD MOTHERFUCKING LUCK TO YOU for the having of this knowledge, by the most gracious face of the for realest of gods.

Gamzee stared at the new message that the Grand Highblood broadcast to the contestants - for a lot longer than it actually took to read, but everybody on board this ship thought he couldn't string two consecutive syllables together without actually factually sweating blood, and he could get away with it. But he had to look back at the viewscreen eventually.

"So, um," said Gamzee, watching a freshly-judged loser - this one all the way dead already, thankfully - get shot up into the air by the psychic trigger, contorting and cracking and spraying green on the way. "I'm guessing this is all up and, like, motherfucking supposed to be, fucking hilarious. And shit. Right?"

"It is meant to be a parable," said the Grand Highblood, who hardly looked to the viewscreen at all. But that was better than the times when he did look, though. "These little lost woolbeast cultists do so motherfucking love their parables. Should they wish to set themselves against the laws of blood and the mirthful messiahs - they get, as the oldest of the scriptures say, to play. a. game." He dropped his preacher's voice and flipped more casual. "And to learn the cost of what it would mean to change all things."

The body of the troll who'd lost dropped back down, slow and steady now, a whole new shape for the contestants below to try and make a space for. It was probably going to take a long time before they built something stable and high enough to climb out of the arena. Or colourful enough. The Grand Highblood had said he sometimes let the contestants out if they had a really good eye for composition.

Gamzee traced in his mind his best friend's symbol, his would-be pale brother's sign, the bright red sacrilege stamped on the walls of the arena. Karkat had never shown much on an inclination for painting and shit like that.

He thought about the message Karkat had received, a sweep and a couple of seasons ago, to move somewhere he wasn't known and change his sign before the time of Ascension, and he thought how he'd told Karkat it was a miracle to get such a caring message from right the fuck out of nowhere. There had been a lot of arguing and research and fear among some of his friends that Gamzee still hadn't caught the track of, but Karkat had after all decided to hide his true sign, long ago, and by now he was all settled aboard his own ship.

It felt more like a miracle than ever, knowing he was safe. But if the gods turned their laughter away from this sign, then where could that miracle truly have come from?

This is really cool, I would love to read more from this AU.
Interesting ideas and well written!
Is it weird of me to want to know more about the tetris game?

Thank you! Although I don't know if I'm going to write more of this, considering all the No-Sgrub AUs I already want to write. And I'm just using normal Tetris for this, the game where you stack a bunch of falling blocks. If a version that uses bodies exists, the internet has hidden it from me so far. (At first I was thinking of writing something along the lines of Tetris yaoi (safe for work, basically, but perhaps not safe for brain?), but the artists of the fandom can get on that one.)

oh, hehe, I expressed myself totally wrong. I actually know tetris. So GH's works with bodies o.o Brrr, what a sick/brilliant and twisted alteration of both tetris and Signless' teaching.
(I found your AO3 account, so I'll probably survive even without more from this AU ;) )

I think "Dang, Grand Highblood, that's not right" would be a good start.

I... am simultaneously disturbed and in love. This is weird and disgusting but also REALLY REALLY GREAT and I just love the weird take on the faiths and the battles and the way you implemented such a simple game.

Thank you! Since there's a fair chance undyingUmbrage contributed to the cult of the messiahs, I figured the cultists would totally go for something as completely wacked and puzzlemurder-ish as this.

YES. I also loved the underlying tones that uu and UU were related to the cult of the messiahs. Because that's a great headcanon/thing/whatever you call it in Homestuck when something is probably going to happen and/or already happening.

(Also your icon is lovely, I must say. Gunnerkrigg is the best.)

I do wonder if there are any nice parts to the mirthful messiahs, if Calliope's involved... but any influence she might have, if it turns out that it's true she's trapped deep inside Lord English/uu, was probably drowned out by him and Doc Scratch.

♥ for Gunnerkrigg! The latest page had me happy-sighing all over the place.

Well, they do have the side of mirth and Gamzee surely started following them for a reason. He's not just a murder-crazed psychopath and a druggie, he's also really got some big ideas about equality and peace and stuff. So surely there's something that drew him into it in the first place, something that lines up with early Gamzee.

Yes, all the ♥♥♥s for Gunnerkrigg. I probably understand less of what's going on in Gunnerkrigg than I do Homestuck, but it's still so much fun! Plus Annie is such a sweetie.

Hmm, I think I always thought of Gamzee bringing his own "softer" side to the religion, but that was mostly based on how I thought of him pre-Murderstuck. It would make sense if the clown cult had a softer side already, so to speak, and that helped it appeal to the more peacable side of him.

HA, RIGHT?? Especially since last chapter and the revelation with Kat. Since this chapter is called "The Big Secret", maybe there will be significant answers. (Probably not though! But you're right, it's still fun.)

I mean, I'm sure he brings his own beliefs and feelings and experiences and general baggage with him, like everyone does, and makes them fit with whatever texts there are on the Mirthful Messiahs. But surely there has to be something that drew him to it in the first place and not, say, the Sufferer's following (which is too great in Be the Seadweller Lowblood for me to believe it doesn't exist in some form in canon). Hmm... now added to the long list of things I want to write fics about. XD

I have one friend that came to discover Gunnerkrigg around the same time I did, and then I more recently got her into Homestuck. And she and I are continually arguing about which one is harder to understand. XD I guess I always have enjoyed time travel and paradoxes. But yeah, hopefully things will be explained soon. Even if in doing so there will only be more questions.
