Hey, shippers! HSO is winding down, so we thought we'd take a look back at the journey, so to speak. With that in mind, this next bonus round is going to be roadtrip-themed! Give us a little taste of your characters' life on the road, whatever form that takes.

Rules

Submit prompts! Prompts should consist of one ship (friendship/gen is fine too!) and a location. This cannot be your team's ship! This round we will not be giving points for prompts.

Look through the prompts and fill whichever you like!

You may not fill prompts for your ship, nor may you fill your own team's prompts.

Warning: Animal harm

"Death Valley," Aradia read from the map. "Dave, Dave, we need to make a detour."

"I can promise it's not half as good as you're imagining right now," Dave said.

"Come on," Aradia said. "It's not like we're short on time."

"Yeah, we're practically made of it."

"That's a terrible joke."

"Sorry, I will step up my game in the future."

They pulled off the main highway, cutting across the desert towards the famous valley. Aradia looked out the car's window and bounced in her seat in excitement.

"Oh!" she cried suddenly, making Dave jerk the wheel. "Dave pull over, pull over!"

"Christ, do you gotta piss all the sudden?" Dave snapped, but he obeyed. Aradia hurriedly kicked open her door and took off into the sand.

"Dave, come quick!" Aradia called. "Come check it out!"

"Okay," Dave said. "That actually is pretty awesome."

It was a skeleton. It looked like some sort of bull, at least by the skull. The body's bones had been scattered by scavengers.

"Weird," Dave said. "There's no farms around here. Maybe it fell off the back of a truck and staggered out here to die?"

"Can we take it?" Aradia asked. "The skull is so awesome."

"Sure, I think it'll fit in the trunk," Dave said.

It took both of them to haul it up to the car. The whole way they kept checking over their shoulders but the dinky little highway was empty.

"Perfect fit," Aradia said, closing the trunk gently. "This is going to look so awesome in my hive."

"Whoa, who says you get it?" Dave said. "It would look awesome in my apartment too."

"Hmm," Aradia said. "That's tough. Maybe we'll find another one?"

"I doubt it," Dave said. "Whatever, it's hot as balls out here, let's get moving. There's suppose to be a gas station soon."

The rumbled down the road, air conditioning not doing half as good a job as it should of. Even with all the blessings of a god it was miserable. When they finally saw the gas station they cheered.

"Water!" Aradia cried.

"Apple juice!" Dave added.

They chugged down two bottles each in the store and bought extras and ice and a cooler and dragged it all out to toss in the backseat.

"Sweet, sweet, nectar," Dave said, sucking down his third juice.

"You're like a grub salts junkie," Aradia said.

"Whatever, let's roll- oh my god." Dave froze.

"What?" Aradia asked.

"Over there? See it? The snake."

"Yeah, what about it?"

"That's a striped whipsnake!" he said excitedly. "I've wanted one for years oh wow."

"Well, grab it!" Aradia said.

"No way, it'll bite the fuck out of me soon as I get near."

"You're the Knight of Time and you're letting a snake get the drop on you?"

"Snakes are fucking scary, okay? There was a kid in my class that got bit by a rattlesnake on a field trip and holy fuck. I guess we should just get going."

Dave stared sadly at the snake before turning and going back the car.

"If you're not going to do it, I am," Aradia said. She walked right up to the snake and like a flash her hand struck out, grabbing the snake by it's throat and there was a distinct snap.

"Wow," Dave said. He looked at her and then at the dead snake and then back and forth a couple times. "Let's stick it in the cooler."

For the rest of the drive they had to push the snake aside every time they wanted to grab a drink. It was sort of inconvenient but hey, it wasn't like you could find formaldehyde in bumfuck nowhere unless you were a serial killer.

"So you get the snake, I get the skull," Aradia said.

"Deal," Dave agreed.

They finally got to Death Valley just before dark. They got out of the car and stood on a hillside, staring at the sunset.

"Wow," Aradia said. "This really is lame."

"Yeah. Though I think we passed a stand with jackalope taxidermy a couple miles back."

"What's a jackalope?"

"You are in for a treat."

I've always wanted to draw the kids as trolls, and this seems like the perfect excuse 8D

oh my word this is darling

Aaaah, so cute! And I like that airport security is useless in the face of troll psychics. XD

She flies to Texas and spends a day oohing and ahhing over his dead-shit-in-jars collection and he tells her that the preserving technique she shared with him is working way better than his amateur formaldehydic fumblings. They stay up too late jamming and have to hustle to throw shit in the back of Dave's ironically rusty pick-up, then grab some greasy drive-thru breakfast sandwiches that last them till they get out of Houston. After that, they have to rely on an ironic mix-tape to sustain them. Journey plays them into Austin, where they have to stop for gas.

Jade drives for a while when they hit a sufficiently dead patch of West Texas, which is pretty much all of West Texas so she gets bored before they run out of empty road and they switch off so she can stick her head out the window and eat dry, dusty air. She wags her ass when she does it, but Dave doesn't bother mentioning it because she's doing it like a foot away from his head and it's a pretty prime ass.

They sleep on a blanket in the back of the truck when they reach New Mexico, bags used as pillows.

By the time they hit Nevada, Dave is rethinking the irony of owning a truck with a temperamental A/C in Texas and Jade is down to her bra and a skirt. Barefoot and half naked is how Jade Harley greets Burning Man. After digging through her bag, that gets upgraded to completely naked except for a homemade tail on a thin rope tied around her waist, a strip of fur the only thing between the world and her ass crack.

Dave slathers on his first layer of sunblock for the day.

By the time it's dark, Jade's organized a circle of like-minded individuals, fur sprouting here and there among bare skin, to howl at the moon. Dave's shirt disappeared some time around his second shitty, lukewarm beer, and someone in a coyote fursuit is handing him...he can't remember what number this beer is. He's been keeping up a pretty even beer-to-water ratio, so he's only a little buzzed, but he feels drunk off the hum of energy and the vibration of drums from a drumming circle off to his left and the VIBE all around him.

He leans against the coyote's shoulder and only then notices the fursuit has a sequined bikini over it.

Tomorrow, he'll regret forgetting to put on a third coat of sunblock at midday, but the memory of Jade Harley's perfect tits by firelight will sustain him through the aloe vera-dulled burn.

The memory of a coyote in a bikini copping a feel of some grade-A Strider ass steak, not as much.

(wow i had not heard of that place before but it looks stunning!)

They are 48 hours from go time when Kanaya finally cracks the deep freeze on the cryogenics pod and brings Jade out of stasis. It takes 24 hours for her to thaw and regain high brain function. She finally steps from the chamber shivering and naked, tail between her legs and ears tipped back unhappily. Jade dresses quickly in the heavy spacer's overalls that Kanaya has laid out for her, hugging them close to regain the warmth she hasn't felt for the seven years it took Cassini 5 to transverse from Earth to Saturn orbit. There's no gravity in the exploration orbiter. The chambers inside are clean and white and perfect, ready for all the exciting exploration and science that's to come.

But first they have to achieve orbit!

Jade grins and pulls herself hand over hand through the zero gee, passing from the storage bay through the expansive science center and beyond that to the cockpit snuggled into the very front of the orbiter. The instrument array is sprinkled out in front of her, multicolored keyboards and buttons and switches and tiny glowing monitors just waiting for something to do. Something to analyze and pull knowledge out of. After seven years, it's finally time for Cassini 5 to do the duty it was designed for. Jade is going to learn all there is to know about Saturn and her beautiful moons and she can barely contain her enthusiasm.

"Kanaya!" she says with a smile as she slips into the seat in front of the main keyboard and straps herself in. "Wow, I know it only feels like it's been a few weeks to me, but it's been seven years for you! How've you been? How many truths of the universe have you solved in the mean time?" She laughs because it's more likely Kanaya spent her time reworking Earth fashion every season by proxy and reading the endless torrent of horrible vampire novels that are beamed out to her every month.

"I've been well. Although the only universal truth I have managed to lay to rest is the merciful extermination of capes from Earth fashion."

Jade laughs. Kanaya's voice is rich and full of as much smiling fondness as Jade's is. The only difference is that it comes from the big speakers set into the walls. Kanaya is a computer program, although she used to be alive once upon a time. Jade knows all about the complex processes that condense the fleshy folds of the human brain to bits and bytes in a multi-teraflop mainframe. Almost as much as she knows about the fancy space-age genetics that were spliced into Jade herself to make her better at thriving in space, so she could come out here and pour herself into the research she and Kanaya are about to spend a decade doing in Saturn orbit.

"You'll have to catch me up on everything that's going on back home." Jade's fingers dance over the keyboards, bringing parts of the orbiter to life that have lain dormant for years. The spacecraft responds like a warm friend. She grins to herself. "Oh wow, this is exciting. There's so much to do. Here, let me take over some of these boot-ups for you so you can concentrate on getting us into the snuggliest orbit!"

"Ah, thank you." Kanaya is nothing but a smiling emoticon in the corner of Jade's screen, white vampire fangs peeping out of pretty green lipstick. "That frees up a bit of my RAM. I stowed my ambulatory robot in order to concentrate on orbital injection protocols. As soon as we are safe and sound through the E-Ring void I should be able to take it out again and help you set up for initial magnetic field analysis."

"That sounds like fun!" She wiggles her eyebrows seductively and adds, "I know they say that sometimes you lose brain cells in cryofreeze, but I definitely remember how hot your android is!"

The little emoticon winks, then blows Jade a pink pixel kiss. "And I have not forgotten what a charmer you are. I have missed speaking with you, Jade. It will be quite enjoyable to catch up. I have collected a library of anime and obscure music while you were sleeping. Perhaps we could once again enjoy some of it together in your down time?"

Jade giggles and rolls her eyes. "But science first!"

"Science definitely comes first," Kanaya responds with a smile. "Ten minutes to primary rocket burn."

She hasn't felt the tug of rocket acceleration in years and Jade grins to herself, so ready to kick off this marvelous science adventure.
