BONUS ROUND 1

Bonus Round 1

Genre-Mixing

Hey, shippers! Welcome to your very first bonus round proper--we hope you have lots of fun with it! This time around we're going to be asking you to mix it up a little--each fanwork posted for this round will be a mish-mash of two different genres, blended together in a delightful incestuous slurry to create an UNSTOPPABLE CREATIVE CONCOCTION--er. Or. Something.

Yeah, we're genre-mixing. That's what we're doing this round.

Rules
  1. Submit prompts! Prompts should consist of two different genres and one ship. This cannot be your team's ship! These are worth 5 points each, for a maximum of 100 points per team.

  2. Look through the prompts and fill whichever you like!

  3. You may not fill prompts for your ship, nor may you fill your own team's prompts.

  4. Fills should be posted as replies to the prompts which they are for, following the format below. They may be any medium.

Title Format
If you are starting a new thread, please use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.

If you are filling a prompt, use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.

Posts not using this format in the title will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, no matter what they contain. They, like all comments on the comm, are subject to the Wank Policy.

Scoring
For prompt posts: 5 points each (maximum of 100 per team)

For fills (as stated here):
First 5 entries in each post: 30 (per entry)
Entries 6-10 in each post: 20 (per entry)
Entries 11-15 in each post: 10 (per entry)
Entries 16+ in each post: 5 (per entry)

All scored content must be created/assembled new for this round.

If you have any questions, please ask them at the FAQ post here, or email them to us (homestuck.shipping at gmail). Otherwise, we cannot guarantee that we will see them in a timely fashion!

The lobby's dark when the doors slide open, but there are still scattered pockets of light from the computer stations where desperate or toadying paralegals are finishing up, God willing, the last of their allotted tasks for the day. They look up in covert curiosity to see her. It doesn't matter how long one cohabitates with one's moirail, or how often one visits her at work; one is still a terrifying alien from an unknown world. Also, one might potentially be bringing fresh coffee.

Terezi's office is behind the sludge dispensary, and a faint muttering comes from it, one Rose knows all too well. She pauses in the door and watches Karkat mumble to himself in the chair in front of the desk. "Darling, you've driven Karkat insane again."

"Objection!" Terezi says, without lifting her head. "Driving implies a lack of consent or direction which can only be applied to the delivery of a person or subject to a place not within their property. The defendant's lease in the location in question is long-standingly known to the bench--" She tilts her head up at this, presumably to deliver a flourish, and focuses on Karkat properly, now moving on to the third Revelations of Nrub'yiglith and steaming a little. "Oh," she says. "I guess I did."

"We agreed that you would try to use paralegals for citations to the Proph3c13s," Rose says, shepherding Karkat gently out of his seat and taking it for her own. "That's what they're for."

"Your ignorance of the Alternian legal system is as charming as your hair smells nice today. That is what legal assistants are for," Terezi says. Usually this is where she laughs, and gets up to go, but she only puts down her highlighter. There's something about the spread of her hand that spurs Rose to lift it, with care, and examine the title on the folder underneath it.

"Oh," Rose says. "Helmhead."

"Helmhead," Terezi says. She rubs her hand across her eyes. "Who is not breaking a single law."

"Hence why you could afford to ferry your informant to the edge of madness," Rose guesses, and Terezi nods, flipping open the folder. She hands Rose the photo, Helmhead at the prow of his ship flanked by the drones, beaming with the proud and fatuous smile of the troll appointed to direct their course. Helmhead wears his blue sigil with the kind of tacky flair Rose expects from remnants of the world before the Game.

"We thought we could swing it as an equal protection charge," Terezi says. "We would say he's violating his duty as a member of one of the custodian classes. But! Here is the thing. His obligation as a member of the custodian classes explicitly extends only to those members currently alive. He can't commit negligence to slurry he hasn't even collected. And he says he is not malicious! He says he simply forgets that the warmer colors breed on a different time scale. It is coincidence every single time. His Honorable Benevolence is not very persuaded by coincidence."

Rose watches Terezi drum her fingers against the desk, the claws leaving little divots in the sheaf of paper. "And when the next generation of grubs hardly has any red or yellow at all, that will be simple coincidence as well, I assume."

"Of the most convincing kind," Terezi agrees. "Karkat, stop your chattering and get me coffee."

"Fhruck yllu," Karkat says, almost intelligibly, and Rose takes his wrist to draw the dark fingers of the gods away from the fragile lattice of his mind. They loosen their grip, one by one, to wrap around her instead.

"When I was young. Before Certain Events Occured," Terezi says. "Before Alternia changed. I learned precisely how to climb into a self-satisfied official's respiteblock, when his ship came into dock. And how to drop a noose from the the top rung of his bunk's ladder." She sighs. She sounds almost dreamy. "It's too short a distance to break his neck, unless you shove down hard, and suffocation takes forever. You make them beg for it."

It's startlingly easy to picture. Rose takes some time with it. "Personally, I'd get a confession out of him."

"Ugh, maybe if I were eight again," Terezi says, flicking her hand. "What's the point? A confession just makes the next one better at hiding it. I need a conviction."

Rose puts Karkat down, earning a coherent "pustulating corpses," and comes around Terezi's desk to rifle through the files herself. She taps them neatly against the table, slips them back into their file, and binds it back up. "Not," she says, "yours."

Terezi sniffs, and for one pale minute Rose thinks she's going to knock the books off her shelves, push Rose down into them, talk about the loss of the bad old world like they did before they put aside childish things, and then Karkat says, "Let me guess. Some asshole thinks a friendship is for mindfucking, not just for Twelfth Perigee." He coughs. "Did you seriously ask me to get you coffee? When someone less forbearing and generally amazing than me kills you, I am going to leave your body somewhere where it'll decay slowly. As a warning to every other idiot who's ever confused-- Wow, get a fucking pile."

The tension runs out of Terezi's shoulders with a sigh, and she grins at him. "You can stop whining. You are perfectly fine."

"Except I'm in danger of vomiting on you two," Karkat grumbles, and gets up. "I'm giving you one minute to sap at each other and then I'm pissing in the sludge dispenser."

"You are the most dramatic human I've ever met," Terezi says, to Rose. "Are you aware that a streak of good timing is not an adequate substitute for substance?"

"Are you aware that I can use the terrible dark magyyks you've inflicted on Mr. Vantas to spoil Mr. Helmhead's whole genetic collection?" Rose asks. "As a last resort, of course."

"Miss Lalonde! That would be terrorism," Terezi says, grinning at her. "And he would have to be fired, for lack of attention to science."

"Twenty seconds!" Karkat yells. An assistant whimpers.

"Well, every single one of my genetic donors was devoted to science," Rose muses, and offers her moirail her hand. "Shall we go home?"

"Dave'll be frantic," Terezi says, fondly, and takes it. "In your professional opinion, do you think we can make it stick?"

"In my professional opinion," Rose says, "you can make a rope out of anything."

AU setting with no Sgrub. There might be a second part if I didn’t suck too much with the characterization.

The room was barely lit, a flickering light in the corner sending trembling shadows all over the walls and the floor; Eridan glanced out of the window, bored of the sight already despite only having been in there for less than a day.

The long line of skyscrapers, the way they slithered upwards, buildings curved into domes, grey and brown mixing together in a bland, unappealing way… he disliked all of this. He disliked the way everything just melted together into a single horrid nothing, how there was nowhere to look at that didn’t just seem the same. He disliked how there was nothing to suggest the city had any sort of identity.

He disliked knowing he had been part of that system until a few months before, and he disliked the fact that if the accident hadn’t happened, he would still be lost in the lull of this nothingness, without knowing better, without feeling the helplessness and the hopeless vibration of the city itself as it slowly succumbed to this blank, tedious void.

He stared down at his hands, covered by thin gloves, and his face contorted into a small grimace.

He didn’t want to be there.

The door of the room was slammed open, and a figure bounced in; Eridan had half an idea to ignore her and continue his sulking, but he knew that his resolve would waver as soon as the newcomer spoke.

“You are sulking aga–in,” Feferi’s bubbly voice wormed its way into Eridan’s chest, making his heart swell with pity and affection. “I to–ld you to keep the lights on!”

He grunted in reply, wincing when Feferi flicked the lights on and the sudden change made his eyes water.

“Wwelcome back,” he muttered instead, glancing at her from his spot next to the window.

Feferi was balancing a bag of food in her hands, smiling that contagious smile again, and Eridan cursed his instincts, feeling his gloom recede slightly. “You wwere gone far longer than you told me you wwould,” he accused, last attempt to keep his bad mood up. “I wwas afraid you’d been caught”.

“Si–lly, I just went out to get us food!” she pointed at the bag in her hands, which smelled definitely of fish. “Clam down, I promised you I wouldn’t do anyfin without telling you first!”

He sniffed, still slightly upset but definitely mollified, even if he didn’t want her to know. “I wwouldn’t a know,” he rebutted, but finally moved away from the window.

Feferi giggled, already getting the food out of the bag and onto the table, and Eridan grabbed the remote before sitting down, observing the rations Feferi had brought home with another, deeper grimace.

“That looks kind a disgustin,” he made a face, poking the plate with a finger.

Feferi rolled her eyes, already obviously fed up with Eridan’s complaining, but chose not to comment, because it was right –the food, despite the good smell, didn’t really seem like much. Unfortunately, with the rationing in the big city, it was hard to have something good, and Feferi still refused to use her money to get real food.

It would defeat the purpose of their presence in the city, and the fact that nobody had to know who they were.

If suddenly someone started using the royal coupons, the news would spread, and Feferi would lose her cover. It was hard enough that she was a seadweller, and as such, clearly distinguishable.

Eridan poked at his food again, but slumped his shoulders in defeat when Feferi glared at him so he shut up and they started to eat.

Feferi glubbed away about anything and everything, as if they hadn’t seen each other just earlier that day, and Eridan allowed her mindless babble to soothe his nerves, finally piping up and making small talk back, feeling elated when his moirail smiled at him.

He might always be gloomy and annoying, but he cared for her, and seeing her smile was the reason he had accepted to make that trip to the big city in the first place.

Even if that put both of them in danger.

They were in a clean room –no hidden cameras, no electric eyes that would reveal their position to Her– but he wasn’t sure how long that would last. Sol was an infuriating idiot, but he knew what he was doing, and if he said they were safe for now, then it meant they were.

Unfortunately, not even Sol, with his connection to the machines, could keep them covered much longer.

“So, wwhat’s the plan, Fef?” he cut her off, and she pouted before turning serious once again. “I don’t like being here”.

Her smile wavered a bit, turning into a determined frown. “I do–n’t either, but we have no otter choice. I’ve been glubbing with the others and we think it’s time to do somefin bigger!”

Her words sent a shiver down Eridan’s back, and once again he wondered if there was no other way out.

He didn’t want to be there. He didn’t want to be part of this stupid coalition against Her Imperial Condescension. He didn’t want to risk his life fighting the system, not when the system had far too many ways to fight back.

The resistance didn’t really have many chances at all.

And yet…

“But,” Feferi looked at him, and hesitantly extended one hand to briefly touch Eridan’s, looking at him with eyes filled with understanding. “I don’t want you to f–eel forced at all! Our porpoise is obvious, bu–t you don’t have to join us if you don’t want to”.

“Fef…”

The quiet acceptance, the way she looked at him, as if she knew exactly he would bail out at the first offer, because she knew him and she knew exactly what he was thinking…

His heart clenched a bit, and he shook his head.

Feferi had been there when he’d been hit. She had been there to soothe him as he went through the worst pain in his life, a pain that he was sure he would never forget, no matter how many sweeps he were to live.

She had been there when he had discovered that he could feel things –feel them in ways he had never thought possible. Read the feelings of things, the world that suddenly held more for him than it ever had.

Objects that carried in them memories and ghosts of their owners, of the trolls who had touched them and held them and made them. Feelings of many different people, pressed and pushed together, carved forever in every surface he touched with his bare hands.

Memories that made Eridan face things he had never wanted to face, until he could no longer hide away. Until he could no longer excuse the society he lived in, until the system around him suddenly stopped making sense.

He’d lived all his life with the conviction that his kind was privileged, that all landdwellers had to die and that Her Imperial Condescension was right…

Until everything he touched screamed the opposite. Until the memories and feelings of thousand lowbloods and landdwellers rushed into his mind through the barest touch.

Until he was forced to open his eyes.

Feferi had been there, with her warm smile and her heart filled with pale pity, with tales of those who had once tried to rebel and had failed in the past, and a burning determination to be the one to succeed.

Feferi, heiress of the Condesce, who should have inherited the throne to be naught but a puppet in the hands of the previous Empress, and was now fighting Her with a small handful of rebels, each and every single one of them with something special, something a bit like Eridan’s own power.

Fef called them all superheroes because they were fighting evil.

Eridan called them fools.

And yet… and yet he was with them, because Feferi was his moirail, because he wanted to be at her side, because…

“Wwhat are you sayin a course I’m comin wwith you,” he scoffed.

Because well, he didn’t like to admit it, but she was also right.

Feferi smiled brightly, her hand tightening its hold on Eridan’s, and he smiled back, even if he was definitely not as sure as she was that everything would be fine.

But he might as well hope.

Terezi chuckled as Dave strung along the entire crowd with ease. He’d only been doing standup for a month now, but he had the lines of a pro and the appeal of a master.

It was to be expected, really. It was his charisma that had gotten him involved in shady business to begin with.

When she first met Dave he was waiting for a money transfer she was supposed to intercept. Miraculously, he’d spotted her before the deal was done, and she was forced to pull her gun and make him an offer.

She’d never seen anyone sell out that easily.

Well, he didn’t just sell out. He struck a bargain. A good one.

While enjoying privileges and safety similar to those of the president, Dave provided Terezi with valuable information and insights regarding the biggest mafia family around.
Speaking of which..

during all of those meteor threats did anyone ever bother to ask how big the meteor would be
it seems like an important detail to me I dont know about you guys

A meeting was about to take place in one of the backrooms behind the stage. An important meeting. Dave was set as crowd control, while several higher-ups took care of some debts being repaid. Normally Dave would keep his friends as far away from this kind of life as possible.

But Terezi wasn’t your average friend.

And his friend, she became with ease. There was so much to like in her smart, righteous yet bat-shit-crazy attitude that Dave didn’t bother to dislike her. Sure, he’d gotten involved with the mafia, but he wasn’t anyone’s lapdog. His talent for laying low kept him safe from suspicion, and if the day should come where he’d be confronted, he had backup akin to a small army.

on a scale of one to jupiter

Jupiter. That was the signal word. Terezi straightened on her bar stool and discreetly pressed a button on her cellphone. Moments later, she got up and tossed some money on the bar. She felt Dave's eyes on her and turned to face him; he nodded with a smirk as she grinned, pushing her glasses further up her nose. Dave did the same to his shades.

Then she was gone, and Dave announced a short break to his audience. He pretended to get some more water, but slipped out of the side door instead. Waiting around the corner was Terezi's car, and she honked as she smelled him closeby. He jumped in, and they took off.

"im still not comfortable with a blind chick driving me around"

"yeah ill let you be the expert on that one"
"H3H3H3"
"so whats going down at the teather"

"dont flatter these people woman they are not my friends"
"OF COURS3 NOT" She chuckled as she made a turn so sharp Dave's stomach turned along with. "TH3 1NF4MOUS D4V3 STR1D3R DO3SNT H4V3 FR13NDS"

Oh hey I wrote something for this too. Except mine turned into sadstuck, oops.

*

I dreamt of you again last night, she writes. We were at the beach the four of us went to that one time. Do you remember that? You refused to get wet but then he pushed you into the surf and you pulled him in with you and I think you two kissed, though I’m not sure. It was a long time ago.

Anyway, last night. It was sunset and we watched the stars come up and they spun around your head you just smiled. I almost kissed you but I didn’t.

I wish you’d come home, Dirk.

*

They sent me a whole bunch of my letters back today, but I know your handwriting when I see it (how many books did you send me, covered in your handwriting?) and it wasn’t yours. Did you move? Why didn’t you tell me?

I’ll be waiting by the sea tonight and you’d better come because I know you can, my Prince.

*

We took a ferry last night. It came to the beach and you helped me aboard. Your hand was cold, though. Are you okay?

The cabin was big and warm but empty. He started playing a fiddle and she started in on the piano. We danced, Dirk, we danced. Has she been giving you lessons? You danced just like her.

We danced out onto the bow and we watched the waves and got spray all over our face and you just smiled. I kissed you this time, and you faded away, slipping through my hands like water.

She has to fight back tears to write, Does that mean you don’t want me, noble heart?

I won’t wait by the sea anymore if you don’t want me to.

(For the record, I'm assuming that you meant all girls school.)

*

You like this corner of the coffee shop. You can write without anyone looking over your shoulder, and you can watch the passersby from over a good cup of coffee.

Like the girl that’s walking outside the shop now: short, tanned, long black hair, neon green scarf haphazardly wrapped, probably around twenty. She looks familiar but you can’t quite place her face.

She steps inside, pulling her scarf down from her mouth. Her name is on the tip of your tongue when she sees you and her eyes light up. “Rose!” she exclaims.

Right, it’s Jade Harley. “Jade,” you say warmly. “Fancy meeting you here.”

“Jeez, it’s been forever! Still writing ridiculous wizardfic?”

“Yes, actually—”

“Right, I heard you got some award for it,” she says, sitting down next to you. “Anything else going on with you?”

You close the laptop. You’d forgotten how much of a motor-mouth Jade is. You haven’t forgotten how good Jade looked in your all-girls school’s uniform, however, even if she was one of the only ones. (Kanaya had taken its very existence as a personal affront, you remember.)

“My life has been rather ordinary lately, actually. I got a cat,” you offer.

“Wanna have some fun then?” Jade has that gleam in her eye that means if you say yes you’ll either end up in jail or a folk hero whose adventures are repeated for years. You know that gleam from your school days together, as well as the grin that’s spreading across her face.

But you could use some chaos in your life.

“What the hell, why not,” you say, and Jade laughs.

“Knew you’d say yes,” she says, and places a neat kiss on your cheek.
