BONUS ROUND 3

Bonus Round 3

Retro Gaming

Hi shippers! Welcome to Bonus Round 3.
In this round, you'll be creating fanworks based on video and computer games from before 2000!

Rules
  1. Choose a game that was released before 2000, and post a fanwork based on the game in some way. Make sure to use the appropriate title format (see below). Examples include: character inserts, rewritten dialogue, costume redesigns, alternate soundtracks, theme song covers, photoshopped promo art, etc.

  2. Your fill should not be focused on Homestuck characters playing the game--the point of this round is to make a crossover.

  3. For this challenge, you are allowed to submit fills based on your team ship. You don't have to, of course!

  4. For this challenge, there is no minimum wordcount. We are trusting you not to abuse that fact!

  5. This challenge will run until 11:59PM EDT July 21. After that time, even if it's just by a minute according to the timestamp, no submissions will be accepted for points.

Title Format
Please use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.
Replace [GAME TITLE] and [YEAR RELEASED] as appropriate.

Posts not using this format in the title will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, no matter what they contain. They, like all comments on the comm, are subject to the Wank Policy.

Scoring
(as stated here)
First 5 entries per team: 30 (per entry)
Entries 6-10: 20 (per entry)
Entries 11-15: 10 (per entry)
Entries 16+: 5 (per entry)

All content must be created new for this round.

We would prefer that any questions about this challenge or anything else in the HSO be emailed to us at homestuck.shipping AT gmail!

The time was now, Rose was telling her group of disheveled and battle-worn peers. The kids and trolls had fought through session after session of monsters and demons from the depths of existence, only to reach this final stage- they were to navigate using only their godtier powers, through the Incipispheres and the Veil, to meet their final enemy.
Rose had spent weeks tucked away in her room on the golden ship, conversing with the dark gods to shed light on the geography of the vast universes they would be traveling through. Painstakingly she inscribed her visions on parchment, and was proud and nervous to present them to her teammates. It was so very confusing, Would they be terrified by the daunting map?

The gods work in mysterious ways, Rose thought as she opened her tome to show her comrades.

"Rose, what is this?" John ask, sounding suddenly out of heir.
"John, I told you. It's a rough map of our journey ahead. Now don't be scared, I know it looks difficult and it will be to navigate, but I think with our combined powers-"
"Rose, I-I... I know this."
"I'm glad you are aware of the trouble ahead, John but-"
"No, Rose. I know this map!" A gasp filled the room.
"Whatever do you mean?" Rose was quite offended. She had worked hard to make her map original, if not borrowing from the dark gothic maps of yore.
John was now shaking his head rapidly. He pulled his old laptop from his sylladex and started to boot it up.
"L-o-l dude you have a PC?" Dave called from beside Kanaya.
"Bro you have one too. I just put an Apple sticker on it." Dirk mumbled from beneath a pile of plush rump.
"shit what."
John had pulled up a program and was stepping back from the screen to show everyone in the room.
"Look. Look. I know this map. I know it because it's. It's from here!"

"Oh my god." Rose whispered.
"No wayyyy!" Terezi chimed in.
"How does that even wor-" Jade started, before she was shushed.
Quiet, drunken giggles came from next to Dirk in the rump pile. Every eye in the room shot over and watched as Roxy emerged, swaying her hips while she pranced towards the laptop.
"Pinball Space Cadet? Now this," she stopped to take a sip of her drink, "is something I can definitely handle!"

You are ROSE LALONDE, and it feels like you have just woken up from a nightmare.
A quick check of your surroundings confirms that you are in an old diner, possibly abandoned. The booth table seat you've been sleeping on is hard and cold. You clutch your head as a stream of memories come back to you; driving with your sister Roxy sleeping in the passenger seat, the relentless snow falling from the black sky and making it hard to drive, and then eventually waking up in the crashed car and finding the seat beside you empty. When you had emerged from the wreck, frantic with worry for your sister and unnerved by the fog around you, you chased a shadow into an alley where a crowd of...things...attacked you.

You don't have words for what they were. And frankly, you'd rather not find out.

But you're not alone in the diner. A young man with shades and clad in a police uniform sits on a stool across from you, his expression unreadable. At least he doesn't seem threatening.

"You feeling okay over there?"

"I have a horrendous migraine, but given the fact that all my extremities are still intact, I won't complain."

"Good. So maybe you could give me some answers on what the fuck happened around here."

You had suspected there was something wrong with this place, and his answer confirms it. It chills your blood and makes you want to find Roxy and get the hell out of here even faster. "I don't know any more about this rather ominous place than you do, I'm afraid."

He scoffs. "Ominous is putting it lightly. We've got some creepy horror flick level shit goin' down. I'm about ready to call Father Karras in for some backup, if you know what I mean."

"Maybe you can help me. Have you seen a girl around my age around here? She's my twin sister."

He flicks his head back and forth. "Aside from you, I haven't even come across anyone living yet."

You're further unsettled and you glance around the quiet diner, and the deserted foggy streets outside the window. "Where is everyone?”

“Hell if I know. From what I can tell, this place just turned into a ghost town overnight. Like the rapture or some shit, except without the trumpets and they managed to knock out all the phones on their jolly way up to the pearly gates. Hey, you got a name?”

“It's Rose. Rose Lalonde.”

“I'm Dave Strider. Wish I could say it's a pleasure to meet you, but given the circumstances...” he shakes his head and smirks darkly. “we'd only be fuckin' kidding ourselves.”

You've decided you've had enough of this place, enough of the disturbing knowledge the policeman has imparted upon you. You make for the door.

Dave jumps up immediately. “Whoa, where you goin'?”

“To find my sister. She's a habitual drunk and she may be slightly hungover, so I must act swiftly here.”

“Look, your sisterly conern is touching, but there's something bad about this place. I think I saw some wild animals out there, and not the friendly kind either.” He says, moving forward to put a hand on your shoulder.

At the mention of wild animals, you rear back from him. “No disrespect, officer, but if there's something out there, I fully intend to find Roxy before...something unspeakable occurs,” you manage to spit out, your mind whirling with outcomes that you can't bring yourself to voice. “She needs protecting, which I hear is a primary duty of an officer of the law, am I correct?”

He crosses his arms. “Well if you're so conerned about her, why the hell did you bring her out here in the first place? Not very responsible, driving in that blizzard last night.”

You bristle at the implication and open your mouth to elaborate, but you freeze. You remember the events of the night before in a blur. Your lips on Roxy's jaw, her neck, while she pratically purred with delight. Your mother storming in and catching you both in the act, her screams. Her long nails grazing your bare arm as you dart past her and she attempts to grab you. The biting mountain air as you and Roxy escape to your car outside, gunning the engine and speeding away. The two of you both trying to catch your breath, fogging up the windows. But somehow Roxy still managed to smile and put her calm hand on your shaky one, the one that was trying to steer at least somewhat decently on the unforgiving terrain. Even in the most hopeless case, her faith in you stood out.

But really, how could you explain all that to the officer? He's rather annoyed with you as it is, god forbid you express that your conern for Roxy goes a little beyond sisterly. To be fair, your parents were divorced, and you and Roxy had grown up seperately, but time was running out and you had no time to go into family history with Mr. Strider. You choose instead to bite your tongue and take a deep breath. “I'll admit that driving in those conditions was a flagrant error in judgement. But the matter stands that right now she is vulnerable to whatever hazardous denizens are lurking around here, and the blame rests on my head. I cannot remain here calmly with that knowledge, officer.”

He seems to mull this over before sighing defeatedly. “I guess I can't stop your crazy ass but I can at least make sure you've got a weapon.” He takes out a gun from his belt and puts it in your hands. You close them around it, feeling the cold metal and praying you can remember the skills from the solitary other instance you've handled a handgun, a bonding trip with Dad some years back. That time was for sport, but play is the farthest thing from your mind now.

“Now don't go blowin' that thing off at random, and make sure you don't off me by mistake. I'll try to come back with help as soon as I can, so watch yourself in the mean time, get me?”

You nod resolutely. “Understood.”

He nods and exits, leaving you by yourself in the diner. You zip up your coat and step outside, watching his retreating figure makes its way through the fog. There's a chill in the air as a light snowfall starts. The silence is deafening, maddening. All your senses are screaming that this place is bad news. Regardless, Roxy is out there, and you have to locate her. You're not sure where to start or what there even is to return to. All you know is that your sister needs her, and you need her.

And come hell or high water, you're going to find her alive.

Genre: tactical RPG

Platform: antique; your best bet is an emulator; your best bet for that is someone who is so deep in illegal activities they won't mind giving a sibling a hand.

Game History

Created some sixty sweeps after the Summoner's Rebellion, the origins of Fire Emblem: Genealogy of the Holy War are unclear.

Persistent rumors have linked the banned game to the Intelligent System studios, perhaps seeing in the combat system a forerunner to the successful series of Tearring Saga, despite the studio's denial. The original score has been lost to the ages, though it's a fair bet to assume it must have included its own version of the resistant anthem "Together We Ride" (banned). The artwork, as well, isn't saying much, displaying the typical features of the time period, and as such could be attributed to any dozen of artists.

As for the code, it has been reworked so many times, by the hands of so many tech-savvy fans, that it is nigh impossible to distinguish between the original scripts and more recent additions - try finding a version today where Celice can't get conciliatory with Yuriya! Thorough researching of the subject tend to show that Yuriya and Celice were originally only meant to be able to be concupiscent - possibly to emphasize Yuriya's conflicted yet enduring loyalties to her co-descendent Yuryus without making her seem like a cheat.

Alone in the series, the plot of Genealogy of the Holy War follows the crusade of two generations of heroes. The first cycle concerns itself with the campaign of an army composed of all stratas in the hemocast, and their ultimate betrayal. The second cycle related how the descendent of the first generation rightfully rise against the unlawful monarch and return society to its former prosperity.

With such potentially subversive material, it's not any surprise that the game was never distributed legally. Nevertheless, Genealogy of the Holy War picked up quite a following, especially among the oppressed such as the Followers of the Signless, and several unconnnected installments have even been developped by devoted fans, often with the same message of civil disobedience and unity of blood colors - or even more radical messages. The first such game, Thracia 413, tells the story of some of the most popular of the descendants, Leahfe and Nannah, and takes place the sweep before the second part of Holy War. A smattering of clues and idiosyncrasies tend to prove that Thracia 413 may in fact originate from the same masterminds as those who did Holy War, but this remains disputed by experts and Imperial authorities alike to this day.

Memorable aspects of the Genealogy of the Holy War include:

- certainly the most subversive and controversial facet of the game, the characters of lime-blooded Deidra and her descendants Yuriya and Yuryus. Coming from nothing, Deidra soon reaches power thanks to highblood Sigurd's pity for her. She is nothing but helpful to the party and the recipient of many answers Sigurd and his allies are looking for. Her descendant Yuriya is similarly gifted and similarly helpful. Only Yuryus follows the traditional stereotype of the power-hungry, malevolent lime-blood who affects highblood mannerisms, and even that is nuanced by the fact that Yuryus turns out to be the servant of Gl'bgolyb - and as such the instrument of a necessity more ancient and legitimate than the blood system itself.

- reproductive relationships spanning the entire hemospectrum. Indeed, one of the most time-consuming and fascinating features of the game is that of the possibility to manage the quadrants of the characters - a specificity for which the Fire Emblem series has become justly renowned. Genealogy of the Holy War takes it further by allowing players to see the descendents of each pairing (spawning heated debate in the midst of the scientific community at the same time: is it truly possible that descendants, though gifted with the same basic skills and potential as their ancestors, may develop differently according to the concupiscent partner of their ancestor that contributed to the genetic slurry? or does nurture alone suffice to explain the divergences between ancestor and descendant?).

Unlike every other Fire Emblem game, Genealogy of the Holy War only keeps track of the concupiscent relationships (conciliatory quadrants are imposed by the storyline, thus anchoring the epic moirallegiance of Sigurd and Deidra in the collective unconscious). Such hemo-diverse romances include the potential matespritships of Prince Lehvin, an incognito seadweller, with olive-blood bodyguard Ferree or rust-blood dancer Sylvia, the kismessitude of indigo sorceress Tiltyu with brown-blood Hazzel... to such an extant that it's often easier to name relationships where participants aren't separated by at least a couple hemo rungs (Sylvia's second flushed pretendant is another rust-blood that she quickly works out is related to her; blue-blooded sword goddess Aierah's heated kismessitude with highblooded princess Laksis is all but fixed, given the name of her descendant Lakche; the teal-blooded trio of Jamkah, Brigid and Aideen builds relationships most easily with one another).

- related: Fire Emblem's notoriety for conciliatory pails and quadrant-smearing owes most of its existence to this installment (though the latter Sacred Stones is another example). More than one player has noted that Laksis' matesprit Eltsan rarely misses an opportunity to act as her auspistice, and that Sylvia's overtures to her rust-blood pretendant are edged in paleness. Nothing is made explicit, but filling in the blanks doesn't require much effort.

- through coincidence or design, the plot bears stunning resemblance to the Summoner's Rebellion and the Cult of the Signless, both movements that stirred the Empire not long ago to a higblood's perspective. The message of hope carried out in the game - that another generation of heroes might arise to carry out the words first spread by their ancestors - found an echo in the preoccupations of followers of the Signless of the time. It's unknown whether the services of the Condesce ever formally linked the two, each being banned on its own, but it's a certainty that the surveillance of culture goods around the time Genealogy of the Holy War was created was at a all-time high. We lost more than a handful of brothers and sisters to the Eduquisition during those times, often drawn out of their wise silence by shipping wars specifically designed by the Eduquisition as traps.

Genealogy of the Holy War is to this day a massively popular installment of the Fire Emblem series, and certainly their most ambitious project until Radiant Dawn. Possession and distribution are sentenced to culling; it is, according to all sources, largely worth the risk.

(Wow this take way more effort than I thought it would. For added effect, listen and change the words! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6eZcV1UuUzI )

Hell yeah!

Slice! Step! It’s all in the mind
If you wanna test me, I’m sure you’ll find
The all things I’ll teach ya is sure to beat ya
Nevertheless you’ll get a lesson from your brother now

Slice – Dodge – Chop – Step
Once more now
Slice – Dodge – Chop – Step
Don’t get cocky, it’s gonna get rocky
It’s time to learn some new moves you disc jockey now

Flip – Jump – Ollie - Grind
Listen carefully
Jump – Grind – Flip – And Ollie

Hmm, yeah I see you’re getting stronger
Kick to the limit in order to last longer now

Slice, dodge – Chop, step – Chop, slice – Dodge, step
It’s gonna get harder now
Flip and jump – Ollie and grind – Flip and ollie – Jump and grind

Come on now, why don’t you follow my words
Because we’re almost done, I’ll make it easy at first
I wanna see if you wanna see what it takes
To be the man with the master plan
Are you the man now?

Slice, dodge, step
Chop, slice, step
Step, ollie, slice it
Step, flip, dodge
Flip, flip, ollie
Jump, slice, chop
Dodge, dodge, dodge

Hell yeah! That’s it for today.
Good job, Dave, you can go on to the next stage now.
