Hi shippers! Welcome to Bonus Round 3.
In this round, you'll be creating fanworks based on video and computer games from before 2000!

Rules

Choose a game that was released before 2000, and post a fanwork based on the game in some way. Make sure to use the appropriate title format (see below). Examples include: character inserts, rewritten dialogue, costume redesigns, alternate soundtracks, theme song covers, photoshopped promo art, etc.

Your fill should not be focused on Homestuck characters playing the game--the point of this round is to make a crossover.

For this challenge, you are allowed to submit fills based on your team ship. You don't have to, of course!

For this challenge, there is no minimum wordcount. We are trusting you not to abuse that fact!

This challenge will run until 11:59PM EDT July 21. After that time, even if it's just by a minute according to the timestamp, no submissions will be accepted for points.

Title Format
Please use this format in your title.

Replace [YOUR SHIP] with the name of the team YOU belong to; please use the characters and quadrant, not whatever portmanteau or nickname you've come up with.
If your team name is not in this format and in the title we cannot guarantee that it will be counted.
Replace [GAME TITLE] and [YEAR RELEASED] as appropriate.

Posts not using this format in the title will be understood to be unofficial discussion posts, no matter what they contain. They, like all comments on the comm, are subject to the Wank Policy.

This would be hilariously funny if you weren’t so hilariously pissed. You can’t believe how completely stupid Sollux is. Here recently you got your hands on old human video games and while their troll counter parts are very similar, you can’t help but think that the human versions are better. This is probably the only thing the two of you agree on.

You walk on listening to him ramble on about some amazing princesses and while the story sounds vaguely familiar to you can’t quite place it. He doesn’t even seem to realize that you’re not even listening any more.

“Zelda is definitely the best character.” He grins at you with his freak teeth.

“Zelda, as in Legend of Zelda?”

“Were you even listening to a thing I said, kk?” His grin falls and he stops walking to cross his arms.

“Honestly? Not really. You didn’t even give any indication as to what you were talking about, you just expected me to know.”

“Fuck you kk. Don’t blame me for your inability to pay attention.”

You roll your eyes because you both know that that’s not really a thing you do, you are more than able to pay attention. You absorb every molecule of information that you come across into your think sponge, your team mates can’t believe all of the things that you remember.

You take a couple of steps further before stopping to look at him. “Zelda is the worst character.”

“kk, you just don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“What?” You stare at him like he’s lost his mind, and as long as you’ve known him, you think he just might have.

“Zelda is a great character.”

Yep he’s lost his mind. “No she’s not.”

His intelligent reply “Yes!”

You groan and tug at your hair in frustration. “Zelda is just the typical princess character,” probably the only reason the skirt chaser even likes her, “and without Link she’d be dead.”

He snorts and you glare at him. He has his condescending look on his face and you’d love nothing more than to punch him. Punching him sounds like a very good idea, but you’re trying to get over your violet tendency. You just clear your throat preparing to tell him exactly what you think.

“Link is easily the best character in the game if not of all--" Your words cut off with a surprised sound, and he lets out one too.

The gray halls of the lab are replaced with a vast nothingness and it caused you to panic wonder what could be fucking you over now. All too soon scenery comes swimming into view, and your standing in a clearing surrounded by weird looking trees in the middle of the day.

You instantly cringe away from the light pouring down on you, but then you realize that you’re not in any pain so you drop your arms from in front of your face and really look around. You ignore Sollux’s whines of “It burns.” as you walk around the clearing. Even though this looks real to you and nothing like it did on your TV screen it takes you know time to figure out exactly where you are.

You kick Sollux’s stomach, “Get up douchmuffin.”

“Why are you so abusive?” He whines up at you and uncurls from his ball on the ground finally realizing that he’s fine. “Where are we?”

“We’re in the Lost Wood.”

“The Lost Wood?” He stands giving you a odd look from over his glasses. “Karkat, do you hear what’s coming out of your mouth? I know the game has left you under a lot of stress, but now isn’t the time to be losing what little of a mind you had.”

“Some matespirit you are.” You sneer at him.

“Okay, well where is your proof that’s where we are?”

“You have to undermined everything I say don’t you?”

“Ehehehe, you’re so cute when your angry.”

You groan repressing the need to punch him, he’s your matespirit not your kismesis. You snag his hand and begin dragging him down a path, “Come on.”

But before you get more than a couple of feet the fairy appears in front of you. You both jump back and you let out a hiss, but she just smiles prettily at you. “I’m sorry boys, but I can’t let you go out like that.” He taps her wand to both of your heads and disappears with a giggle.

Your eyes shut tightly because you already know what’s happened without even having to see it. You can feel the material brush against your legs in the breeze. Finally you open your eyes and Sollux’s cocky grin tells you everything. “You look stupid in green.”

“Ehehehe, says the guy in a dress.”

“FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK THIS IS STUPID!” you screech sending birds into flight.

“Ehehehe, I don’t know kk, I think you look pretty cute.”

He may be your matespirit, but you swear to god you hate him.

Dave is alone as he approaches the throne in castle Figaro, his first time home since he'd left years ago. His footsteps are soft against the red carpet, which is a relief. The room is so quiet you could hear a pin drop, the castle still and silent in the dead of night.

He looks over the fine details of the throne, carved out of stone and lined with blue velvet for the seats, and runs his hands over the fine details of the carving. His thumb finds a hairline crack in the arm, one he remembers vividly when perched in the chair as a child.

"Hasn't changed much," he mutters, and pauses a moment before taking a seat, the fabric groaning softly as he takes his place. The view is the same as it was when he was younger, but he fits in it better now. He's taller now, in the throne of his father. He looks across the chamber and sees what his brother sees.

"But it's all different," he says. "Mom and Dad are gone. Everyone's gone. Ever since..."

He recalls sitting in that very throne, a few inches shorter, as the castle staff whisper about the health of his father. He remembers running as fast as he can down the stairs at the feet of his father's bed, where he finally lay cold and still. He remembers Dirk running after him, calling his name, and finally catching him in the dark down the main path of the castle.

"So they went and told you," Dirk said, as Dave chomped on his lip and wiped tears off with the back of your hand before Dirk could see them slide out from under his shades, although it was probably too late for that. Dirk stood behind him, to give a little bit of respect, with one hand reassuringly on Dave's shoulder. Dave shivered and struggled to get it together, failing again and again as some little sign of his despair escaped him one after another.

"Edgar! There you are," Dave recognized the Matron's voice as she approached and Dirk turned to look at her. "Your father... his last wish was that Figaro be divided between you."

"You have GOT to be kidding," Dave snapped. His voice was wobbly and embarrassing but he couldn't keep quiet any longer. "Everyone is saying the Empire poisoned Dad, and the only thing you people are thinking about is who is going to be the next king?! It's pathetic! You're all pathetic!" Dave could sense Dirk peering at him, his shades glinting in the corner of Dave's eye as he growled that "no one cared when Mom died, either."

"That's not-" the Matron began, and Dave immediately swung to face her, shoving at her with both hands so she stumbled. Her eyes were wide with surprise.

"You were as bad as any of em!" Dave screamed.

"Dave..." Dirk said, his voice calm and low.

"It's an empire of murderers," Dave hissed. "They won't get away with this!"

Dave turned, and looked to Dirk, infuriating in his complacency. His brother just stared back, as far as Dave could tell, behind those glasses in the dark. For god's sake the whole thing was so stupid. Everything was stupid. And he wouldn't even side with his own goddamn brother.

Dave spun and walked past the matron, running into the throne room and up the stairs to the tower above castle Figaro. He stared up at the night sky - beautiful for what a horrible day it's been - and waited, listening, for Dirk to follow him up the stairs.

It didn't take him very long.

"I've got to get out of here," Dave said, without even turning to acknowledge Dirk. "I'm forsaking this war-sick realm for my dignity while I've still fucking got it, and maybe some freedom for once. Didn't you say you were sick of it, too?"

Dirk sighed behind him and shifted. Dave imagined he was crossing his arms. "Freedom," he said, thoughtfully, and then said nothing for a long time. "What will happen to this place if we both leave? What would Dad say?" With that, he approached Dave finally, standing next to him against the tower ledge. Dave looked over to him to see Dirk rubbing a coin between his fingers.

"Let's settle this with a coin toss."

Dave stared at his brother, with what was a surely dumbfounded look on his face.

"If it's heads, you win. We'll take whichever path we want with no regrets," Dirk poised the coin to balance on his thumb. "Okay?"

Dave couldn't even nod. He just stared at Dirk as his brother declared, "this is for Dad," and flicked the coin high into the air.

"And so, you opted for your freedom," Dirk speaks, his voice not quite loud enough to travel through the throne room as he steps out from one of the side rooms. Dave watches him as Dirk leans against the wall and smirks a bit. "It's been ten years... The little shrimp's grown into a fucking lobster."

"And you're a king crab, cleaning up shit on the desert floor," Dave thinks fast to add that second part. Just king crab, what a stupid fucking insult.

Dirk approaches and has a seat in the throne at Dave's left, sinking into it with a sigh. The brothers Figaro, side by side at the throne, like father wanted it.

"I often wonder if he would have been proud of me," Dirk says, slouching into his throne a bit. Hardly kingly behavior.

"Are you kidding?" Dave says, "don't ever fucking doubt that."

Dirk glances over to Dave and the two of them look at each other again, like they hadn't when they reunited months ago. Like now it's different, now that they're right where they should be, each of them sitting on the throne assigned to them as grown men.

"Ten years," Dirk says.

"Where did the time go?"

The brothers sit in silence for a long time, gazing down through the throne room. In a better world, they both should have been together the entire time. If it wasn't for the empire...

"Here's to a couple of confused grown-ups," says Dirk, as he climbs to his feet. He steps down the stairs from the throne and raises his hand as though holding a glass. "Here's to you, Dad."

Dave climbs to his feet and stands at his brother's side - moving maybe a bit too fast, being a bit too eager. He holds his hand up too. "To Mom, and to Figaro."

They lower their arms and Dirk smiles at Dave again, and Dave smiles back at him. When this is all over... when the Empire has fallen and won't get away with its treachery any longer... Dave knows where his home will be.
