Things That Made Me Laugh Unattractively - The Rec List

Rec 1: Roxy<3AutoResponder - Shounen anime + a cooking show

Why I’m recommending it: The image of a pair of shades with arms and legs is already enough to do me in, but the rest of it is just as funny. The use of "AR-kun," the idea that the oven needs to be "defeated," and the comic style in general is perfect. And the comment about the anime is just the perfect cherry on top of this hysterical sundae.

Rec 2: Jane <3 Eridan: political intrigue + nature documentary

Why I’m recommending it: This is best viewed by scrolling down slowly, so that the picture does not spoil the surprise. But either way, this is a really great concept, and I love the characterization; it's nice to see an Eridan who is enthusiastic and joyful about something! But the thing that makes me rec this above anything else is Jane's face. It is quite possibly perfection.

Rec 3: John <3 Karkat - Alpaca romance + Action

Why I’m recommending it: The prompt alone is enough to prompt ugly laughter, but ho-boy the fill does not disappoint. John and Karkat have quite possibly been perfectly translated into alpaca form, even down to John's alpaca-glasses. And then they are holding alpaca guns. With an alpaca explosion in the background. I'm sorry but if you don't at least chuckle at this you are heartless.

Rec 4: Actual rainbow drinker, Kanaya Maryam

Why I’m recommending it: OK so obviously this is a rip-off on actual cannibal Shia LaBeouf, which is funny enough in itself. But what I think is even better is that nearly every person managed to keep the reference rolling in all of its absurdity. All of the art is charming, even as Karkat is limping away with a gnawed off leg. Honestly I don't understand why there is no recording of this version yet.

Why I’m recommending it: It is possible that I simply have a weakness for Homestuck heads pasted onto things. In fact that is pretty likely. But that doesn't stop this fan adventure from being absolutely ridiculous and enjoyable at the same time. This is the perfect fanadventure for this particular pair. Hands. Down.

Rec 6: Cooking Show + Vikings for John<3Karkat

Why I’m recommending it: This is one of those pictures I feel guilty for laughing at because it has what appears to be a disemboweled lusus, and then I stop feeling guilty because it's hysterical. Both Karkat's nonchalance and John's horror and disgust are perfectly and hilariously expressed. And if that's not enough for you, they are also wearing viking hats.

Rec 1: A Troll's Primer on the Human Alphabet

Why I’m recommending it: Not only is the artwork and the design of the book well-done enough for the final product to pass for a real children's book (albeit one that is... not actually all that suitable for children...) - but WOW, what a creative take on the prompt! The poem is very funny and well written; whoever wrote it obviously worked hard on it and it really does sound very much like something Equius would write. Every piece of artwork is STUNNING, and I honestly can't decide which one I like best. Dirk's customary comments are just a final sweet touch of hilarity. This team really brought it this year!

Rec 2: Future Sight

Why I’m recommending it: This is another fic of the "I don't even ship it, but WOW" variety for me! I love the way the team handled the "balancing act" prompt - by giving us a snapshot of how Dave feels about Terezi, and then one of how Terezi feels about Dave. I am in love with the spot-on capturing of each of their voices; the olfactory and gustatory imagery in the half written from Terezi's viewpoint is just sumptuous and you can practically smell and taste it all for yourself. I love how they fit together here, how Terezi is both cocksure and cautious regarding the upcoming battle, and how Dave finds himself so set at ease by her presence - and they just want to be around one another, too.

Rec 3: Two Hives of the Same Whole

Why I’m recommending it: This entry, like the Round 1 entry I recommended in a previous comment, is just too heartwarming to be adequately put into words. I really enjoy that the team built their entry on the girls' shared habit of drawing on their walls, and... just, wow, I remember audibly sighing, "awwww...". Nepeta and Terezi are both lonely in their own ways, and I adore the idea of their thinking about one another and putting their feelings into artwork while they are apart.

Rec 1: You Are the Music in Me: Suddenly Multicolor Tangle

Why I’m recommending it: I have never been so pleased to see "Somewhat Elaborately Arranged Suddenly Pasta Salad" as part of the media section of a title. It totally jives with the spirit of this competition, I feel, as well as being really awesome and delicious-looking. The rest of the entry is also fantastic, of course - the drabbles are powerful, and I am very fond of the playlist. But pasta salad, man.

Rec 2: Gambling: A Powerpoint

Why I’m recommending it: Nobody needs to be told how adorable this entry is. Because it's really, really cute - you can tell as much just by scrolling down to see the faces of PM and WV at the end. But the powerpoint itself is brilliantly and hilariously done, taking all of the powerpoint cliches that you just KNOW AR would exploit, and tying them together with his disdain for illegality, which results in a hilarious and charming entry as a whole.

Why I’m recommending it: I was really impressed with the idea behind this entry! Though many of the round 1 entries took on the idea of gambling on a relationship, I loved how this one used the octet in order to show all of those different possibilities. Some of the rolls are heartbreaking (roll 7 in particular!) and some of them are hysterical, but all of them represent the pair well and lead to a very enjoyable entry as a whole.

Why I’m recommending it: WOW JUST LOOK AT THOSE COLORS! I also really like the roughness around the panels, especially how the last one on the right sort of bleeds away, slightly upsetting the balance created by the other images. Plus, it tells a great story without the need for direct interaction between the characters; stellar work!

Rec 2: Surrealism and magical girls for Aradia<3Feferi

Why I’m recommending it: Do I even need to explain myself? Just look at the picture! The colors are lovely, and the designs are brilliant. And I keep on getting drawn in by the hair. Plus, two pretty alien girls kissing; what is not to love?

Rec 3: Time to Get Lucky

Why I’m recommending it: Well first off the fact that this is also kind of a game is GREAT. I have spent many minutes and imaginary units of grist trying to get both images. And the images themselves are also very well done! I'm also very fond of the structure of the "slot machine," and how it looks so much like the Sburb style. Basically this whole entry is awesome, and if you can stand flashing gifs, you should definitely go take a look.

Rec 4: SH3'S BL1ND, R3M3MB3R?!?!

Why I’m recommending it: Wow, so first off, the format is stellar. It's such a great interpretation to use the two sides of a coin to act as the two halves for the entry. And the art itself has so much character! I was particularly drawn in by the reactions of both Dave and Rose to being "rejected" - Dave pushing Terezi away, and Rose curling in on herself. The body language is beautiful, and speaks volumes even when the entry only consists of one written sentence. Overall, just gorgeous.

Why I’m recommending it: There's something really creepy about this. You'd think that with all the horrorterror fiction in the fandom, that it'd get old after a while, but this story twists it in the creepiest direction and makes it feel brand new. You're never quite sure if Dave's actually experiencing the things he's experiencing, and somehow it all seems so day to day at the same time.

Rec 2: The Single Glimpse – Dave♥Rose; southern gothic + lovecraftian horror

Why I’m recommending it: Any story where Dave is uncomfortable is cool by me. This plays it perfectly because while you can tell he cares about Rose a lot, he's also absolutely terrified of the connection to the horrorterrors that she has. She's mostly okay with them talking to her and changing her, but you get to see the whole thing through Dave's eyes, which makes you the reader uncomfortable as well. Really cool fic.

Why I’m recommending it: I love these character designs. Love short haired girl Dave and a suit redesign of my favorite Rose dress. Also you can really tell how uncomfortable Dave is through the straight face, with her arms crossed as the tentacles get closer. I'm sure Ross is about to show her up and then call her a wuss.

Why I’m recommending it: There are so many quotable lines in here. It manages to show Dave's ridiculous knack for getting into bad situations while also trying to act like he's not in a bad situation. And then he bails himself out and continues to act like it ain't no thang. Wonderfully in character. I laughed a lot while reading this.

Why I’m recommending it: If you haven't read this yet, you need to. There's an SBAHJ arc. That alone should sell it, but there's also a grimdark arc! Wherein Dave raps in the broodfestertongues. And the first line of the intro to Trickster Dave is spectacularly well chosen. I laughed a lot while reading this too.

Why I’m recommending it: Yaoi plus SBAHJ combob??? Every time I look at this I laugh at how huge Dave's butt is. And his hands! No plot arcs here, just hilariously rendered pixels.

Rec 1: Dullahan Dave and Leanan Sidhe Aradia

Why I’m recommending it: Just look at it. The art is gorgeous--the coloring, the details, the atmosphere, everything. I especially adore Dave's suit of armor and Aradia's flower headpiece. Oh, and the eyes are great, especially the expression within Dave's. This piece is moody, creepy, and a very, very solid entry.

Rec 2: Chronicle 1265

Why I’m recommending it: I was completely blown away by this fic. The historical AU setting was so fucking brilliant, and, oddly enough, it gelled with Vriska and John's characters seamlessly. The imagery was wonderful (this writer sure knows how to paint with words), and the decision to tell the story through journal entries was great. And Vriska. Her characterization was spot-on and magnetic--the best characterization I've read in awhile, actually. A lot of effort went into this piece and it shows. Well done.

Rec 3: From My Heart And From My Hand

Why I’m recommending it: Easily the creepiest and most chilling round 2 entry! Dave's point of view is almost torturous to read because of, well, because of what Gamzee's done to him. I was a wreck with sympathy and horror. Dave's descriptive narration was haunting, and Gamzee was characterized in his suitably psychopathic state. Kanaya made an appearance as well but, gah, everything was just so twisted. This was a powerful spin on the kismesis relationship, one that I won't be forgetting for quite some time. All I can say is that I'm so glad that Dave got that tiger.

Rec 1: Refraction

Why I’m recommending it: This entry is so surreal and fantastic and astonishing; it glows and positively drips with vibrant imagery. Not only has the team imagined Rose and Aradia as gods, but have gone MANY steps further and introduced readers to the respective galaxies they rule and the people that live within them. It reads and feels like music, and is such an original take on the prompt. If there were more writing set in this universe, I would devour it and still want more, jeez.

Rec 2: A Symphony for Dirk and Jake

Why I’m recommending it: I can't get over how very, very sweet this entry is, and how well it contrasts and yet combines Dirk and Jake's respective personalities and interests. The art style is heart-meltingly cute, not to mention the tall pile of non-organic objects on Dirk's side and the lush forest on Jake's side. The piece accompanying it is simple but says so much, and echoes the theme of contrasting elements being used to create a coherent whole - the rapid beats combined with the piano chords for an upbeat, yet very peaceful piece. Overall, it is such a treat to look at and to listen to! :OE

Rec 3: Lost and Found

Why I’m recommending it: This entry is just breathtakingly lovely and just SO feeds my love for this tragically underappreciated ship. I love the song choice, and the artwork/sort-of-comic accompanying it flows so well, and is full of colour and expression. I would SO be down with this being turned into a video (with a slow scroll downward, perhaps some brief animations? :OE) a la EET! This is another team that has just been AMAZING this year, wow.

Rec 1: The Sea Doesn't Have To Be A Lonely Place

Why I’m recommending it: This is a stunning art piece. The textures and the coloring are mesmerizing. I'm particularly in love with the day-to-night gif. Boy doesn't Karkat make a pretty mermaid? Another thing, I absolutely loved Eridan's character design. Like, he has a great face. Is that weird? It's not, it's wonderful. Top that off with an adorable ending and you've got a great piece.

Rec 2: A Spider's Kiss

Why I’m recommending it: Alright well. I guess I'll start off by being completely shallow and say wow look at these hot ladies. But no, this was beautiful. I love the ripped curtains in the background, the reflection off Vriska and Kanaya's hair, the clothing!!, and their poses. The colors are great and I love the forbidden, sexually charged atmosphere it gives off. Bahaha, icing on the cake is that it's a romance novel written by Rose. Who wouldn't read that?

Rec 3: Hello, Goodbye, Hello

Why I’m recommending it: I thought this fic was amazing. Captivating right until the very end; littered with details that just made everything feel so real. Karkat and Sollux were so in character that it practically hurt. The tone of this piece is very tragic, but it has hilarious moments that fit with the characters so well. A blossoming friendship in the midst of a dying society. It's a little heartbreaking at the end but, hey, all the best stuff is heartbreaking, isn't it? .-.

Why I’m recommending it: This feels like a slice of a much larger story, and I love when that kind of thing happens. It's got Terezi playing helpless and then pulling out her blind girl kung fu on people, all to settle a legal case. She whirls Karkat along in her wake and that's exactly how I ship it.

Why I’m recommending it: You can really taste and feel how ruined everything is here. It's a really cool genre to tell from Terezi's perspective, because she smells the grit and the grease and the destruction, and it resonates. It's what happens after the magical girls come and try to save everyone. Things get destroyed along the way.

Rec 3: A 1-in-8 Chance

Why I’m recommending it: It takes a lot to sell me on one quadrant or another for these girls. Their relationship is such a wreck and I don't think either of them really understand their feelings for each other. This story plays with their hate in a slow subtle way, so you can feel it bubbling under the surface of their strained fondness for each other. And when the hate comes out, it feels natural. I love that in a story.

Rec 1: The Frost Witch and the Lady of Thorns

Why I’m recommending it: This was far, far more tragic than I expected it to be, and the wonderfully descriptive nature of the language used only adds to the poignancy of the story.

The last line (and the art immediately afterwards) is particularly wrenching.

Why I’m recommending it: A very subtle, cleverly executed entry from a team that has proved very talented throughout. The portrayals of both Jade and Aradia feel quite realistic; this doesn't feel like a fanfic so much as reading about the two faintly odd girls down the street whom you know well.

Why I’m recommending it: The spareness of the prose in this story is what makes it work; the atmosphere comes out nicely with the lack of superfluous description. That, coupled with the understated nature of the romance ("You need someone right now,") is what sold it for me. All in all, this is a very well-executed tale.

Why I’m recommending it: I haven't even seen How To Train Your Dragon but this looks perfect. Of course Terezi would have a huge red dragon and Karkat's would be tiny. Why I’m recommending it: Okay, this is beautiful. I adore the style, the adore the coloring, I adore the character design. I'm particularly fond of Aradia's hair. I love the concept of the three "stages" of Aradia centered around the time symbol. It's so stylistic and pleasant to look at.

Why I’m recommending it: I've been yearning for some Dirk/Sollux lately (don't ask why), and when I made the prompt I honestly wasn't expecting anyone to respond. And certainly not with something as incredible as this! The style is gorgeous, and it practically screams Antarctica. I loved the details too--like the bear head, their puffy clothes--the scarf they're sharing! This doesn't feel like two characters thrown together--this actually feels like I'm looking at two nerdy boyfriends on an equally nerdy trip. It's brilliant.

Rec 3: BR4 Signless/Disciple fill

Why I’m recommending it: I've consistently been blown away by this team's art. The watercolors, the character designs--everything is so detailed and gorgeous. The Disciple is absolutely adorable and the Signless' expression is priceless. The mood of this piece goes along perfectly with the songs I chose, which is awesome. Plus, it's just beautiful to look at.

Why I’m recommending it: This was, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful things I've read here! It's a really amazing take on Round 2's theme, and really pulls you in and tugs at your emotions.

Why I’m recommending it: OH MY GOD this is just one of the cutest things ever, seriously. The art is just so lively and expressive, and the story it tells is really, really ... cute. Cuteness overload from this entry, oh my god.

Rec 3: Deep Death Waits

Why I’m recommending it: This is beautiful. This is gorgeous. This is ladies being dangerous and allusions to Greek myth. It's survival horror meets the three-year stint on the meteor -- sort of. And above all, it is just plain fantastic. Also present: morbidity, courtesy of two girls fixated on the dark and the gruesome.

Creator: The entire team -- Round 1 Submission.
Why I’m recommending it: The colors in this submission are beautiful -- everything matches quite perfectly. The facial expressions perfectly convey the situation, and I have to admit that I laughed pretty hard at Feferi's innocent look. Also the fact that this is watercolor really does something for me, and I really appreciate all the hard work that went into its creation.

Why I’m recommending it: WOW. What a ship to play out! When I saw the ship in the title I was extremely hesitant, but I loved the pacing and the characterization was perfect. It is like suddenly, I had no idea why I didn't already ship this. I love that they took their role as a team that can ship anything to its extreme, and they pulled it off flawlessly.

Why I’m recommending it: It's hot. The characters are vibrant and perfectly in character, their arguments are intense and their makeout sessions are even more intense. I was blown away by how flawless their dialogue was, and really wanted more of the story at the end! All in all a good fic with a good plot.

Why I’m recommending it: It's just too cute! Tavros looks so silly and yet so adorable and that art style is just so nice. Why I’m recommending it: I really love this game so this one speaks to me on a very dorky level. The art is adorable and the little details are really nice! Why I’m recommending it: I am going to be completely honest here and admit that I've never played this game and have no idea what's going on, but that really doesn't distract from the submission at all. It really looks like it came from a game made in 1985! I'm really impressed with how they did that, wow.

Why I’m recommending it: I loved how it fit the theme of gambling with a set of cards, and the quality of each card was fantastic and amazingly consistent! Each style and card brought something different and interesting to their relationship. Some of the cards were heart-warming, some were hilarious and some were serene. The baby, Hass/summoner and trickster cards all took me by surprise, yet that made me love them even more. It made me think about lots of scenarios between the two I simply hadn't even though of before, and just plain-and-simple made me smile. A beautiful entry that really stood out from the crowd!

Why I’m recommending it: A beautiful submission I'm surprised wasn't given more attention! The subdued tones of the art really bring out their deep red eyes and gives them and beautiful yet slightly eerie sculptural look. This is also partly because of the stunning, stunning shading job. Their skin is flawless, the hair detailed but not overbearing and Dave's armour is impressive. I love the feeling that they are both monsters, something that was done very little in round 2. The call to canon with Dave's knight armour and headless was another really excellent addition. I am completely and totally in love with this picture.

Why I’m recommending it: Ahh where to even begin?
First of all, it fit the prompt to a tee, and lovely balance between events with colour and contrast (such as the amazing city silhouettes at the start). Each panel brought another interesting development and it was done with great pacing and minimal dialogue -- an impressive feat! I can't stop gushing at the gorgeous cityscape and the body language and variety of subject matter. I can never not see those two chasing after each other in a mix of thief and justice which was brought to light in this submission yet another reason why I feel head over heels. Super great fantastic job!
